I decided that explaining this is way harder than showing how in video - next time my buddy is around with his 97 I will make a quick clip showing the vice grips and screwdriver method.
Just remember, if you hit yourself in the head or break the rear view mirror you are working way too hard...

I tried the needle-nose vice grip and two screwdriver method just didn't work. Instead I used a small screwdriver type nail puller and just worked it for what seemed like forever. I could see it moving though, so kept going. You do have to be careful when it gets loose because when it's finally ready, believe me it comes out fast.
