Default Changing Cat-back Exhaust

I need to remove my after-market exhaust and re-install my stock exhaust. Previously I've always changed exhausts using a lift. I'd like to do it this time at home without a lift. Is it possible to remove/install the stock exhaust without a lift, just jacking up the rear? How high do you need to get the rear up in the air?

Everything I have read says a minimum of 36".

I've done it three times. It helps to jack up the front, too. Takes a little more time, but is much safer, IMO.

How high did you have to get the front and the rear?

I'd like to know if the 36 inches everyone quotes is from the ground to what? - bottom of the tire, bottom of the suspension ...

Hi Striper,

Here is a photo of my Borla Stinger install. The dude in the photo is a good friend and fellow Vette enthusiast (1965, '78, and '79 in his stable).

It was super easy and took all of 30 minutes to do including raising the car.

I supported the front with steal chocks in front of the tires and I removed the front air dams...not neccessary but they will be squished if you don't remove them. I liked the idea of popping them off first...it takes just a couple of minutes.

I didn't bother to measure it. Just put it up on jackstands as high as it'd go on the back, and about a foot less on the front. You have to swing the swaybar out of the way, too. Like Jay's pic.

It depends on the exhaust - most of the aftermarket exhaust is 2 piece and you can get them in/out without it being jacked up very high. The Ti Z06 exhaust which is all one piece requires the car to be pretty high. I've done it several time; very slowly. A typical floor jack, like the aluminum jack from Sears, won't get the rear high enough without placing several 2x4's underneath the jack or between the jack and the rear cradle. The pic above probably isn't high enough to get the Ti in/out.

Do you mean the photo of my car with its *** in the air?

Dude...I didn't lower it and take the photo. The height you see is high enough to remove the stock catback by simply unbolting it.

You don't need to get crazy with bricks and blocks. You will need a taller jack than a race jack (I used a taller jack with an extension designed to lift an SUV or taller vehicle).

Mine was 35" up from the ground to the lowest point of the rear fascia.
