Differential Coolers
Some background on my car.....my car is just used for street driving most of the time. However, I have ran it at the Big Bend Open Road Race, the Texas Mile, and the drag strip a couple of times. I had a DTE stage 2 differential with 3.90 gears installed a little over 2 years and 10k miles ago. I also had the billet pinion support and DTE strut brace installed at the same time. I followed all of DTEs break in procedures and changed the fluid more often than recommended. Over time, the heat got to my gears and they whined so much I couldn't stand it. After a 1400 mile round trip to the Texas Mile in March, and hours of incessant gear whine, I decided to get the differential rebuilt.
The differential is currently at DTE for a rebuild. I'm going with micropolished 4.10s this time and Phil is making sure I get all the latest and greatest processes. He is setting up to be able to accept the differential cooler from LGM.
I don't plan on running any road races or open road races without installing a differential cooler. I just wanted to see what the opinions where of the LGM cooler and if there are any other options. Will this keep me from having to rebuild my differential again? It is a pretty serious investment...about $3k installed. I can almost buy 2 more differentials for that.
The gear whine started after averaging 135 mph at BBORR and got worse over the next 2 years. If I just run regular road races (like Hallett) and autocross, do I still need the differential cooler?
