Well, I left the car to be painted yesterday and they said it'd take approximately three weeks. (I'll believe that when I see it) It looks ok as you walk away from it. I can't wait to see it when it's all new and perfect again.
And then you're going to take it right back out on the track and get it sand/rock blasted all over again... and the cycle continues
I'm not sure which is worse, the Interstate, the locals with dump trucks, or track. I've given up for now and if I get sick of track then I'll get it repainted. My hood doesn't look so great up close. From 10ft the car looks good though.
Probably not a bad idea given the $$$ you're shelling out for a new paint job. I've been using a nose and mirror bras then shelf liner down the sides. It does help a lot. The middle of the hood seems to be the place I'm taking the most abuse. The lower panels under the doors just get beaten badly but they don't seem to detract from the look of the car.
I did a sneak attack on the shop Saturday knowing they would be closed in order to see what progress they've made in a week. They've worked on the trouble spots where the chips were deeper and it's prepped for the wet sand phase... here's some cropped photos:
Edit: I couldn't help but notice that from the side with the front and rear caps removed it looks like a C6.

In my area of the country, I'd think somwhere b/w 8-15K would be about right. Depending on whether you needed a color change or not. Obviously changing the color involves a bit more work.

But, they should also remove the hood, front fenders and rear deck lid to paint. Those items should also be painted off the car. Then tape everything off and paint the center section and rear quarters.

I don't know what all they are going to remove as they haven't gotten that far yet - but if you want every panel off the car you'd better come to the table with 12-15k. That seems like a bad idea based on the build quality of the car and the rather thin paint process used on these - so I'm not forking that over. My intention right now is to get a good paint job on it at a reasonable rate, after which I won't be driving it nearly as much due to my engineering position I'm in now, and sometime toward winter I'll likely dump it and buy a 911 GT3.
12-15K, no way. Burke's Corvette specialty shop in Orlando, FL gave me an estimate of just under $6K for a complete repaint, removing every panel possible on my Z.

It's very easy to remove those 3 panels. Just a few screws and they come right off. It's how they paint them at the factory. And it will eliminate some of the overspray in the gaps between the panels.

I'll have to talk to him about that. Didn't know he worked for so cheap.
I need him to fix a few things on my car that were done at his shop last year.
I believe somewhere in there he stated the job was costing b/w $10-15K. But, I'm going on memory here. I haven't read that entire post in quite some time. But, they are doing the job right!!!!!

Yea, he changed colors so every jam/crevice had to be done. Doors completely torn apart and off. Big job to say the least.. I was also looking into paying www.corvetteshoponline.com a visit in Tampa to check out their work. Talked to him on the phone, said ~$4k with removal of bumpers/hook/trunk/headlight covers/all weatherstripping/brake ducts.

I talked to Burke's as well - I *think* it was like $5800 for a same color, $6800 custom color. Tim does *spectacular* work too (specializes in Corvettes, Concourse winning cars, etc.) My BPP hood and Spectre Werks rear was painted by Burke's, fantastic, perfect match.
I had a Supra with a "show quality" paint job - and they painted the engine bay, interior areas in the hatch, etc., (none of which is needed on a C5) and even with all that work plus some aftermarket body parts which required prep work, it was still "only" ~$9K.
I think $10K-15K for a C5 is extremely high (though I'm sure the results are awesome).
after which I won't be driving it nearly as much due to my engineering position I'm in now, .
I'm very interested in what you have for an engineering position. You've certainly made some well thought out points in various threads. Shows some logical thinking.
You can see my post in Z06 owners jobs, or something like that, from a couple of weeks ago, to see what I do.

PM me if you'd prefer not to advertise it.

I have a long term contract as a test engineer. I'm working on RAID Fibre Channel, SATA and iSCSI disk array storage systems that are in a preproduction state for various companies that make servers and server boards who are customers of the company I'm contracted to which makes Hardware RAID controllers, RAID chipsets, and Software RAID controllers.
