I just checked my 03 MSG coupe and have them also. I never noticed them. Must be something that was added in 03????

My guess is:
Hidden anchor brackets for a LATCH (Lower Anchorages and Top Tethers for Children) System.
The owners manual states that Top Tethers are required in Canada.
Maybe cheaper to install them in all vehicles and just cover them if the vehicle is shipped to the US.
Perhaps a Canadian owner can shed some light on this.
