I know...not another gas price thread. I can't help myself though. I was driving through this little town in the Eastern Sierra Nevada range, Bridgeport, Ca on Sat and saw this gas price sign. I almost choked. I had just paid 3.17 for diesel 2 hrs down the road and it was 3.40 for diesel 20 mins up the road. These people are gouging their neighbors!!
Sorry about the pic quality, camera phone! I was driving my truck, so I wasn't looking at the premium price!
I get so when I see high gas prices. If oil companys are making highest profits ever, why so high? We do need alternate fuel technology which I know is coming, but it will be a loooong time before it makes a difference.

It wont get that high unless there is a major catastrophy to supply or production. The NYMEX, traders set gas prices not the oil companies, did jump up amost 10 cents on Thursday.

Correct,
I'm not a big fan of "big oil" either, but they don't set prices. They sell their product on the open market, and it's the traders that set prices. They buy and sell oil on the commodities market (just like the "Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice" in Trading Places ).
If the traders get nervous about supply, they buy now at a lower price, to sell later at a higher price. No difference between this, or any other stock, other than when Google goes through the roof, you don't have to take extra cash out of your pocket.
Katrina whiped out something like 70% of the oil rigs in the gulf. That has more to due with oil prices than anything else going on in the world now.
