I ebay a good bit and have had to take a few things back in return because of very very minor things or things the buyer did not understand. It just isn't that big of a deal unless the shipping is very expensive. I would have just had him return it and return his money. I had never heard of a european plate either and I really doubt the average Joe even knows what the SAE is. If the pictures didn't clearly and accurately depict the differences that is the sellers issue.
I have bought a lot of very hard to find stuff on ebay and it can be extremely helpful. Try to find an original radio delete plate for a 1970 Dodge T/A Challenger or a set of good condition original seat belts for a 1970 LS6 Chevelle SS. Ebay can really be the bomb! Having said that, you do have to be careful and ask questions.

Besides, how did you get the plate originally? Did you buy it thinking it would fit a US Vette and found out the difference? Sounds to me like you were trying to pass off the problem to the next guy. I have no doubt that the buyer would be P.O.'d.
