I sold a front filler plate on ebay about a week ago. The plate was Smooth and appeared to be a euro style plate. in the discription, i cinluded the SAE part# and the fact that it was made in Canada by Peregrine Oshawa Inc.
The buyer seemed to be very grumpy that he bought it an it didn't fit his american vette. He never asked me if it would fit and demanded a refund. I told him that i wasn't responsible for him not researching the product with the given information. Eventually, after trying to reason with him, i just gave up and told him to leave whatever feedback he felt like.
His response to this was full of unnessicary profanity and it was all i could do to keep my cool and respond like so:
"I would expect a little more lingual restraint from a corvette owner and the class to admit when they made decision without researching what they were buying. Perhaps in the future you'll take the time to read a little before makeing financial decisions. "
I think i'm just going to not sell anything on ebay anymore. I already got hosed by paypal and i'm not hyped about people on ebay who are just going to be jerks.
It's worth noting that I've sold/purchased several items on this forum and have had absolutly NO PROBLEMS with any member reguarding transactions. (perhaps that's because we all read before we click?)
i think the Euro plate is 2/3 as tall as the American plate. Seeing you're in england, if you need one in black, i know a guy who's anxious to get rid of his....(he may be a bit cranky though and try to rip you off)
The standard plate is long and thin with all seven characters on the same line. I'm allowed to run a US sized 12x6 as mines a "gray import". If it was UK spec I'd need a regular sized plate which looks even worse
I would have refunded his $$ and then blocked him as a buyer again. Not enough $$ to get excited about. I sold a set of chrome wheels once and after clearly identifying the scratch on the wheels where the rubber sealed in a non visible part of the rim the buyer complained about the scratch. I told him "not an issue, ship them back and I will refund in full + shipping for the rims" He responded, "just checking to see if you were honest I"ll keep the rims in spite of the scratches".
After the tires were on the scratch was not visable and he got the rims for 40% the cost of new rims not to mention they were NEVER driven on. Jim
I buy alot of stuff both here & EBAY... I don't find either one to be much different. It would have seemed logical to have asked for a return of the item and refunded his $$$. Both parties happy and no feedback issues.
It sounds like he didn't know the difference and this was an honest mistake. Then again if the diference wasn't posted how many people would have known this? (not me)
Interesting to hear the other side of the story. I've never sold anything there and don't intend to. I have been ripped off by a couple of sellers though. I bought an '02 Corvette dealers brochure one time. What the goof ball charged me was enough to mail it Priority Mail. Instead he sent it Medial Mail for a $1.47. The bad thing is that he literally mailed it in a grocery sack and needless to say it arrived mangled. When I complained his response was I should have bought insurance. I checked with the Post Office and the way that he wrapped the brochure it was not insurable. I gave him a bad feedback and also filed a report on him with the Postal Inspection Service (there is a great deal of fraud going on by sellers shipping damaged goods using ebay and then trying to collect on the insurance). By the way, ebay doesn't give a crap for the buyer. Their conflict resolution procedure is a joke!
If I was the buyer it never would have occured to me that there is any difference especially buying from someone in the states.
I agree.
TheRadioFlyer, were you aware that the item might require modification? If so, was it stated in the auction. If you were not aware, I would have refunded the buyer's money.
I've been buying/selling on Ebay for over 9 years. Sometimes you have to give the buyer the benefit of the doubt. It's worked for me (4,000+ feedback with zero neg).

Reason: correction
I have to say that if I was bidding on a filler plate I would expect the thing to fit. I have never even seen a "Euro" vette before in person, so I guess I would be ticked off if I were him as well.

Sorry to say, the wise ebay seller and buyer learns to cover all the bases as he gains more and more experience. If it were me, I would have explained the part does not fit domestic C5s. I see many C5 items on ebay for which the seller thinks the item fits all C5s, such as MAFs..(3-pin connectors 97-00, 5-pin connectors 01-04); side view mirrors with one or two connectors that are specific for the memory feature; radiators that are unique to A4s and 6-speeds; and on and on. You really have to do your homework. The best thing to do is read through the part number list...you can get it on the forum...you will be surprised at the number of model year specific items otherwise thought to fit all C5s.
