98 coupe, 67k miles, 6-spd, 3rd owner. The steering wheel locks and cannot be turned when I pull the key out of ignition. Last weekend got the "Remove key for 10 sec" message, ignored the message and turned the car on, steering wheel was turning fine. The message never re-appeared. I bought the car in March this year so not sure if the previous owner(s) did the CLB, GM or any mod on the CL? What should be my next step. Advice appreciated.
I've been through the same situation....
Just set aside about 45 minutes to read the sticky at the top in regards to the dreaded Service Column Lock issue. ANY question you could ask is answered there.
Mine had the recall done, lock removed and I still had to have it towed in because the fuel shut-down issue would not allow me to drive it. Read up and good luck. (Get a CLB)

If the previous owner did the CLB you wouldn't be having the problem now,,,, so they didn't.
I've heard that violently shaking the wheel back and forth can release the lock. If it works get a CLB quick. If it doesn't,,, I think its stealership time.
Someone else will verify shortly.
And put your flame suit on QUICK! This is the worst thing that can happen to your car (convenience wise) and the easiest one to prevent.

The "wait 10 seconds" could be that the resistor chip on the key was dirty. Clean the key.
If you can turn the wheel when the car is off - you have the CLB installed.
Even so, if the wheel locks you need to get a mod done. Fit the CLB if you don't have it. You're living on borrowed time and the GM mod is worse than useless.
I would call the dealership and give them the VIN and see what service history pops up. Hopefully none of the recalls were done and you can just install the CLB.
Even if this problems turns out to be related to the VATS (dirty pellet on the key), you still need to get the CLB installed.
If I personally knew everyone that replied back I would thank each of you in person for taking time to reply back. I have just ordered the CLB and will install that ASAP once it arrives. Also may be worthwhile to check with the stealership on the car's service history so that I don't have to keep guessing everytime something fails.
