Likely cause is that starter either didn't disengage after starting (less likely) or (much more likely) a short caused the starter to re-engage after the engine was running. That would cause the starter to spin way too fast and blow (explode) the armature apart.
Very strange. Probably an electrical gremlin since we can't even FORCE the starter to try and crank when the engine is on, the car's computer won't allow it...
Is your car a A4 or a MN6?
Mine is a A4. I had the flexplate explode. A4s do not have a flywheel. Took the top of the starter off and went thought the bellhouseing.
Wow !! This photo scares the He$$ out of me. Never seen before.
You could always check for used motor at dismantler, probably half the price, just an idea since you said it was a money issue. Could be half the cost normally they know the miles on it before it is pulled out of the car. Feel for you.
Just a follow up ......................
I called a local yard since I see you live near me, Bauer's Auto Dism 559-233-9046 spoke to Gonzo, located one for $4,800 with 55k on it, complete motor. May or may not be worth it. Just trying to help.

You can get a crate motor (LS1 or LS6) for that price.
FYI, C5s have a starter block. Try to start your car after it is running, you won't engage the starter. I have used this to reset my gas gauge after getting some bad gas.
They supposely did this because they felt the C5 ran so smooth that one might not realize it was running. Right, with the stock cam mine vibrates pretty good at idle!
Neither do I, got pics?? A starter just does not "explode"
i had a starter fail on a motorcycle once - it didn't explode but a bunch of the inside stuff busted to hell - lots od small pieces flying around - and it also cracked the outside case!!!! so did it explode? - damn near - it also took out the teeth on the flywheel!!!!! i had pic's for a long time but i think i tossed them - tom
