Sorry, but have a feeling you are out of luck in terms of a recall. First time I have seen anything posted about a starter exploding. Anyway, best of luck getting it repaired - sounds like a new motor is in your future.

yeah I think your defently right! thanks for the response!
Weird... I would assume that the starter some how engaged while driveing or with the engine running? Either way I'm sure that there isn't a warranty ect.. Are you going to sell it with a blown motor?

Once had a starter engage while driving my Dodge Van because the positive bat cable wore through and shorted. Made one hell of a noise, but didn't hurt the engine.
Did it ever dis-engage at all after starting?? Maybe a short would somehow make it re-engage, I'm not sure. It seems pretty weird in any case... It must not have meshed at all but simply jammed into the flywheel and the resultant binding caused the problem... Very strange indeed... Dang... sorry for your loss!
I have to admit, I have never heard of anything like this happening before. Weird, a starter exploding and doing so much damage. I think you're stuck with the repair bill on this one.
Sad to say, but sounds like you'll be replacing the motor. What ever you do, DO NOT have a GM dealer put a stock LS1 back in the car. You can upgrade to the more powerful LS2 (400+hp) engine for the same or lower cost and it pretty much drops right in!
