If you do use gloves, dont' get the soft cotton kind....they are slippery on the roof and can cause you problems. Get gardening or kitchen gloves with the little rubber dots on them.....lots of grip.....protection from the hot top, and no danger of it slipping out of your hands and costing you BIG $$$'s.........When I bought my car, the center glove box door had a big gash in it from the previous owner dropping the corner of the top on it..the gloves are cheap insurance I think...
Easy to take off. The two-man job is putting it back on: 1. (you) to put the top on and one (friend, neighbor, stranger, etc.) to remind you to latch it!!!
Having just gotten my car tuesday night, I could get the top off and put it back on alone pretty easily now as of yesterday, so its definitely a one man job. I am only 5'10"
Much easier than on the C4s where you have to unbolt the top before taking off.
I take the top off on my C5 all of the time !!!!
I've taken it off while inside the car and works pretty well.. except I'm a little worried about it not being secure in the back if I have to stop fast... ouch that would really hurt!
I did, however, break my transparent top two days ago by not having a good grip on it. I was standing on the driver's side and the passenger peg got a little stuck. I tried to wiggle it slightly then it came out, crashed into the car (back end first) then the lexan smacked the e-brake handle. It took out a chunk about 3" x 2" in a nice shape (of the ebrake handle) So be careful with those! It also ended up tearing the leather on the handle. I've taken my painted roof off hundreds of times and never once dropped it...grr
I had a similar accident. I was taking the top off as I lifted the front and begain sliding it forward I didn't have my hand under the top. It fell onto the emergency brake handle and cracked. Expensive accident. The problem is you can't see when the rear pins are out while standing outside the car unlike the C3 vettes I've owned. Nevertheless, my careless mistake but removing the top is a one man job.
I kinow this thread is about removing the top but when putting it back on if you always do this you will never have it blow away from failure to fasten.
The first step in putting the top back on is to lower both visors all the way down. Leave the visors in that postion until you fasten the three latches.
If you get distracted when you get in ready to drive off the lowered visors will remind ypou to fasten (or check) the latches!
Don
Oh, not sure what do if you have removed your visors as some have.
well i'm only 3 ft tall so my method is a little diferent.. ive only tried it once and it worked great... when i get in my car, i stand up on my seat cushion and jump 3 times, once to open each latch... then i start driving off... once i hit about 55 i once again stand on my cushion and jump high enough to push up on the front but not high enough to fly out with the top... no but really it is extremely easy... a couple little hints i didnt hear anyone mention... it a good idea to just barely get the front up high enough to get ur fingers under it and get a tight grasp.. then, keepin rearward tension on the back, then take the drivers side peg out first... then pivot it out enough to get ur right hand under the back, still keep rearward pressure on the passenger peg... then while u pull the passenger side peg out i always brace the top of the backside with my forearm to keep it from swingin or hittin anything... and same reverse process to install... have fun! one more little tip, put ur left foot in the dr side floor to get u closer and to help with balance..
