Default Targa - One Man Operation?

Is it smart to try to remove the targa top by yourself? I haven't tried it yet but it seems I could loosen it while sitting in the car, and lower it into my lap, back edge down. Then wiggle out of the car, pick it up, and put it in the back.

Or, lift it from outside of the car, putting one hand underneath as far in as I could reach, and twist it out.

I have read about folks damaging their roof while trying this though.

I was wondering if anyone has a little procedure worked out. Thanks.

Well... I undo all the latches... I lift it up in the middle enough so that I can grab it with my hand.... then I grab it on the drivers side and lift up... I am a tall guy so it may be easier for me and my vette is lowered.

Certainly a 1 man operation for me.

My method -- I rarely take it off if I'm inside the car (after a drive) -- rather, I remove it before getting in the car.

1. Triple tap on key fob unlock button to Window-Valet the windows down (love it!)
2. Press key fob trunk release.
3. Whichever side I'm closest to, reach in unlatch front, then back.
4. Open trunk on way around to other side.
5. Unlatch other side front.
6. Tilt front of roof up.
7. Tilt opposite side of roof up towards me.
8. Place carefully in back.
9. Lock in place.
10. Close trunk.

Whole process takes me less than 30 seconds without rushing... Unless you're a tiny little thing, I don't see it as being a difficult evolution.

You'll get good at it as time goes by but I think that it's a total one man operation.

Easy process.... also recommend carrying a set of gloves in your trunk... the top can get HOT in the sun.

Do not have your wife sitting in the passenger seat the first time you try to remove it. There was a post where the man dropped it on her head and you surely dont want that to happen !

It takes a little effort at first, but you'll get it down pretty quick. Just watch out if its been sitting out in the sun , top can get pretty hot.

I don't know, there've been days that it might have been appropriate...

I've done mine by myself every time, no problem. I haven't seen it mentioned in this thread, but the biggest thing to be careful of is making sure you have latched correctly when putting it back on. Don't want to be part of the FRC(flying roof club)

Thanks for all the replies, I guess I'll have to practice. Good tip about the gloves.

I love the way the car looks with the roof off. Exotic.

Thanks again.

One more tip - keep a pair of work gloves in back - the top gets hot on warm days....

Go back outside and open passenger door, go back inside and drink beer. Go back outside and unlock drivers side of top, go drink beer. Unlock passenger side of top, drink mooore beior. unlikc cnter of tip, drnkin mooree bere. u guot tha poicturess.
