If you read the manual the 1 to 4 shift only takes effect when you use less than 21% of throttle (i think) and between 15 and 19 mph. If your worried about it you can shift into 2nd earlier, before you go into that turn uphill. That being said I do think it is somewhat of an annoyance.
I have noticed that you can get around the CAGS if you go to shift from 1st and the shifter is in the neutral position, and you feel that it wont let you shift into second and wants to push you over to 4th, let pressure off the shifter quickly the CAGS will dissengage then you can shift it into 2nd. Not a seamless shift but will get you into 2nd.
I thought I could live with CAGS. Until it activated at about 15 mph going up a steep hill in San Francisco. I had to pull it into 4th, then screw around getting back into second; by this time the car had slowed to 10 mph or so and I nearly had to go all the way back to 1st. Gah!
So I put on the CAGS Eliminator and never looked back. I still skip gears all the time (usually third) but I do it when I'm not going up a hill at 15 mph!
