I just purchased this car and when you pull the deck lid handle, the lid pops open maybe a quarter of an inch and you have to grab it by the edges with your fingers and pull it open. Aren't they supposed to open up farther? Is there some kind of spring to make it open or is this normal operation? Thanks

I'd say it's normal; my hatch has always been like that. I use the following technique as I normally open the hatch to get my car cover once she's all buttoned up... Push the hatch release, exit the vehicle, close doors with window up, pressure pushes hatch well open (at least an inch, easy enough to get you fingers in there). Not trying to be silly, it works & keeps from chipping the edges
Thanks Boomah. I had already discovered your way by trial and error. Just wanted to be sure that it was a norm to not open further. I like Arfboy's springy deal too and will invest in one of those. Thanks for ya all's input.
In late 2002 production or beginning '03 production a running change was made eliminating the right side trunk hinge. Due to many complaints a TSB was issued to add the right side trunk hinge if you complained about the trunk not popping up enough. I have an early '03 (#5224) and requested that the TSB be performed. They installed the right side trunk hinge--much better now but still not perfect. Hope this helps.
A trip to your favorite hardware store with a good selection of springs and something to protect on end of the spring/carpet (hole plug) will accomplish the same for about $5.00+/-.
Buying one after market takes the fun out of experimentation if you're so inclined.
