Default Mpg Question

I have seen a lot of posts here about gas mileage, and mine does rather well. But, I have not gotten above the mid 20's doing the math myself per odometer and gallons used.
My question is about the 30 mpgs. "Is anyone doing the math or are these strictly from the DIC reading".
My DIC says I am getting better than I really am...Just curious I guess as I am satisfied with the mileage I get especially with a car that performs like this. '99 FRC

I'm guessing the DIC is pretty accurate. Remember, you're getting an AVERAGE.

I've never divided miles by gallons used. Probably should just as a double check.

Oh goodness, yes I was getting about 425 miles per tank of gas on my trip to Bowling Green. Set the cruise between 70-80 in 6th. In town I usually get maybe 275 miles per tank of gas.

So doing the math, about 15 gallons per fill up on the trip for 425 miles is about 28.33 miles per gallon.

I get about 27-28 on the highway at 80 mph, with my 4.10s.

In the city I can get about 18-19 if I try, but thats no fun so I get about 14. haha

I had a H/C change z06 ported heads, a big cam. LT headers and i am getting better gas milage with the engine modded due to the excellant breathing. I have 435rwhp m6. I am getting 33.5 mpg at 70mph with the air on! I could barely reach 30mpg. stock.

I would think that the DIC would be more accurate then any manual system as it would be almost impossable to get the tank full to the same level each and every time.

Last fall I did a run of 805 miles to Milwaukee and southern MN. The DIC said 33.5, I did the gallons and miles and came up with 32.5 MPG, of course, I did not go over 70 mph unless in MN then 75 and back to 58. Oh ya, did I mention a six speed with 65,000 miles on it?

I have a buddy who ran from Oregon to San Francisco last month with an '04 Z06. His computer read 32.9 m/g (yep, nearly 33 mpg) when he arrived home.

I also have a Pontiac GTP and the computer will tell me I used 13.4 gallons and the tank will take 14.3 to fill it. It can be as much as a gallon off, so when it's calculating m/g, it's using less gas than what was actually needed giving a higher m/g reading!

Ya gott-a watch those computers!

Hmmmm....Maybe I need to manually calculate on the Corvette.....

Yes, I have gotten better than 30 mpg when I have calculated it by hand. The DIC may be a little high, but not by much in my experience.

Final drive ratio on A4 is not as good as the M6. Not sure if that is true with the newer A6?? My best is around 28, too.

Yes, the DIC is pretty accurate. Every time I have calculated it, I found the DIC to be 1 – 1.5.mpg optimistic (both during city/play driving or long cruses). On long 75-85 mph cruses the DIC shows 33mpg.

I have found the DIC to be very accurate. If you figure out your gas mileage over more than one tankful (such as figuring it out over a month or two's worth of driving) you'll find that the DIC is almost right on the money (on mine it is within 0.2 MPG)

I get 18-19 MPG in mixed driving (tons of rush hour traffic) and 28-30 on long highway trips.

Averaged 32.2 coming back from BG CI. The DIC said 32.3, but the calculator was 32.2. 70 + air on.
Going down was less 30.4 Targa off and 70-80. Seems I get better milage with the top on windows up and air on. Go figure.

How do you figure? The pump shuts off at pretty much same time since the federally mandated vapor recovery/over flow prevention systems are all pretty regulated.

I found the most accurate system is to:

1) Reset Trip meter during last full fillup
2) At next fillup, divide the number of miles on the trip meter since last fillup by the number of gallons needed to fill tank.

I average 22 mpg in the city/short distance highway. Long distance highway is 28-29 mpg with spirited passing/highway onramps. I can crack 30 mpg with conservative driving on the highway.

The results are pretty consistent considerring my driving style doesn't vary too much. I think that's pretty accurate IMO.
