Default Noisy Tires

I just bought a C% Vert. My question to you experienced guys is which tires do you consider to be the noisest and which would you replace to keep the noise down?

Also what other mods would help keep the noise out of the interior?

The stock (goodyear) runflats are quite noisy. There are lots of choices out there as far as quieter tires; some runflats some not. I have Firestone Wide Ovals on mine and they're very quiet. I'm very impressed with them. (and the price was right, too -- about $700 for the set).

I hope this doesnt start something ugly, its certainly not my intention. But why do people get so bent out of shape when someone asks a question that has been discussed already. I think searching threads on this one would take considerable time. no harm in asking to save a bit of time.

To answer part of your question, I installed raamat and ensolite throughout my Z and noticed a dramatic reduction in road noise. Of course you have to pull all of the carpet out to do this, but you would likely get a noticable improvement by just doing the trunk if you wanted to avoid pulling the seats out.
Search around for some more info on the tires, but I know the runflats are supposedly pretty noisy. I would think anything thats non runflat would be an improvement on that. Maybe someone can recommend a good quiet tire if you dont mind sacrificing a bit or performance. Good luck!

I think that some of we more senior members could have a little more patience with new members. Answer the persons question and suggest a search of what ever their question is. Now to answer the question. Stock runflats are very noisy. If you wish to stay with runflats Michelin makes a quiet runflat as does Firestone, and Pirelli. Also using some audio sound proofing in the rear cargo area can quiet down stock tires.

PS a loud exhaust and turning up the radio also help

OEM Runflats are generally accepted as the noisest tires. Firestone runflats and Michelin Runflats are better, but for real noise and ride improvements you can go to non-runfllats.

Goodyear GS-D3 (non-runflats) have been getting rave reviews.

I have found that 4 to 6 inch fiberglass batts (in plastic bags) stuffed into the three rear storage bins stops a lot of noise. This is cheap, easy and weighs almost nothing. These bins pick up a lot of exhaust and tire noise due to their location.

If you are primarily concerned about road noise -- you will LOVE Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. They make them in both run flat (a little noiser) and non-run flat (the quieter of the two). Get yourself an inflator kit and the non-runflats and you will love your car again. They are so quiet that you do NOT hear them at all on the freeway. All I hear is the quiet mumur of my Corsa Indy's with the engine at 2600 RPM at 80 (yes, I've got 3.73's.......)

Not to beat this to death, but I think it is reasonable to direct the poster to consider trying search, but in the spirit of helping the person out which is what I believe to be the collective intention of the forum, additionally offer suggestions on search words. New-bies in particular are not likely going to know the best search words to use. Alternatively, just kindly take the route to answer the question as BIll Vett chose to do.

Runflats are the noisest, radials are not.

I think the stock runflats are even louder than the other runflats.

Do a search for "frostking" and see a cheap soundproofing mod. I changed my tires to Kumho Ecstas and did the frostking. I have VERY minimal road noise.

After 34k of nose from my orginal goodyears. I got a set of Michlin Pilot Sports A/S ZP run flats. WOW what a difference. Quiet ride that we both enjoy. Also smoother ride than the goodyears.

Go to tire rack and do a comparsion of the tires. You will see the Michelins have the best tread wear, heat, and traction ratings. I personally will not drive without runflats. So I did not compare the other tires.

The only thing more annoying than the "use the search" is the "IBTL guys" trying to build up their post #'s -

Before everyone gets into a lather about whether it is appropriate to suggest performing a search, I don't think that this an unreasonable suggestion. It wasn't phrased in a mean spirited manner, it was an answer to the question. Just using "noisy tires" as the search criteria yielded 16 threads. Using "quieter tires" as the criteria doubled that number to 32....and that's only current threads, not the archives. So I don't totally buy into the arguement that a noob isn't going to know what search words to use.

However, I do agree that if you are annoyed by answering the same questions over and over again, the simplest solution is to not bother responding.

This forum is meant to be a place that members can share ideas and information. I think we all have lost sight of that fact lately. Offering the suggestion to perform a search is that poster's suggestion, which beats giving no answer at all.

In response to the OP, to not hijack this thread - others have mentioned some viable solutions. Before anyone can make a valid recommendation of any meaning - you need to think about what's important to you. Is it treadlife, runflat capability, all season capability, optimal performance for drag racing, best tire for autocross and track usage, cost? Are you planning on replacing the tires on your existing stock size wheels? Do you plan to upgrade your wheels, and if so - what sizes?

Sorry for the rambling response.....

The OEM GoodYear runflats are the noisiest tires...

Any non run flat willbe a lot quieter.
IF you want to keep ruflat technologygo with Frisestone SZ 50 better handling and much quieter.

YOu can add insulation or sound deadening as suggested
http://www.exoticvette.com/insulation%20c5.htm

or also install

a Sound deadening partition

I replaced the GY's with Michelin ZP's and couldn't be happier. The car is much quieter and rides a whole lot better.

I'd run with the tires that came with the car, then get a loud exhaust and turn the CD player up...that way you can't hear the road noise
