I'm far from an authority on such matters, but I believe the difference is the intake manifold, heads, cam, crank, exhaust system are combined to create the additional horses and torgue.

I believe it's the heads, cam, lack of pre-cats, and raise in RPM limit that actually give it the extra 55hp. The heads flow better and raise the compression to 10.9:1. I believe all 2002+ LS1 engines share the same intake,thin-walled exhaust manifold, and block with the LS6 engine.

Basically in a nutshell, although I do believe all 2001+ LS1 engines have the LS6 intake.

Corvette LS1 vs LS6:
-different head castings (LS6 flow slightly better stock) 241 on LS1, 243 on LS6, LS6 heads have sodium filled valves for lighter valvetrain weight and a smaller combustion chamber for higher compression.
-All 2001 and newer Corvettes and F-body LS1s have the LS6 intake.
-different cam specs (02-03 LS6 cam is much better than 01 or regular C5)
-different PCV system
-slightly different block internals (crankcase port windows larger on LS6)
-same crank and rods, I believe pistons are a bit different

Cam Specs

Corvette LS1
198/208 .500/.500 115.5 LSA

Corvette LS6 02
204/218 .551/.541 117.5 LSA

The intake on the '01-'04 LS1 is the same as the LS6.
