Default ? for 1/4 mile

Well I am finally taking my 01 to the local drag strip. I need a few pointers from you experts.
I have a coupe mn6 .

My question is, will I get better times with the roof on (extra weight) or off (lighter but worse aero dynamics) ?

Any other "tips" would be helpful. I am shooting for mid 12s with just catbacks and Blackwing. Any chance of that if I have a good start?

I dont think they will let you take the top off. At least all the drag strips Ive been to wont. Ill put it this way, your car is capable of 12's, it will all come down to you though.

you have experience? street tires? mid 12s will be a challenge and if this is your first time at the track with the car I would set a more easily attaniable goal for now. Worry about breaking it into the 12s first. Then worry about mid 12s later. Leave the roof on. Try getting a good 60' and make sure you hit your shifts and go from there. Good luck

Try to have between 1/4 and 1/2 tank of gas. That alone can save you about 60 pounds.

As for mid 12s, I would be very impressed if you ran mid 12s your first time out. I do believe you can run in the 12's though with a good launch.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

Best advice is to do a search for posts by Ranger and read all of his how to articles there are links to them in his user profile. And mid 12's is going to be hard i would shoot for the low 13's first time out. Just for info i took my stock 01 z06 out after having it for 2 days and ran a corrected 12.8 at 109. so good luck on your search for the 12's

Most important thing is your technique. Stress working on that. Being a good driver is the best mod you can have.

mid 12s will be very tough with street tires and if you've never shifted running down the strip. i'm with the others guessing low 13s are more realistic. be sure to let us know how you do!

does ANYONE here do mid 12s with basically nothing done to their c5??? even an experienced dragracer?

oh, and check your track....you may have to meet helmet regs and wear closed toed shoes, long pants and shirt with sleeves.

Well correcting it to sea level isn't relevant either. Who races zero feet above sea level? Pretty much all of us are above sea level. Your little notations give you the advantage over us people that go by real world numbers instead of math equations.

yeah....how do i correct for intense heat and humidity?

in any event, i think he's telling the OP that his z06 didn't even turn the type times that he's hoping for.

It's hard to "practice" launches since I will not do it on the highway. Guess my first shot will be at the track. I will get back to you guys with the numbers. Thanks for the advice. I think I will be very happy at around 13 first time out.

Hey the only reason i posted in this section is to try and show somebody that unless he had lots of racing experience in a stick then he will not hit the 12's stock. Yes i know the car is probably capible of it but is the driver? Same instance with me and my Z06. Car has way more power then his coupe and i still wasn't able to get the results i wanted. With a crappy prepared track no grip i ran 13.7's in a 01 zo6, with 2.3 60's yes it was at approx 4500 ft but that is beside the point i was posting for the original poster and i am sure he doesn't like us high jacking his thread. I am going to be the bigger person and quit reading your posts and this thread. Now i know why i never leave the z06 section. Almost thought that i was on ls1tech.com.

My first time to the track in over 40 years was a few weeks back. Running stock coupe, 6 speed, 3/4 tank of gas, 220 lb driver, temp 86, humidity 65%, elevation not a factor, no wind. I was sort of dissapointed. But the forum was quick to jump on 'the driver' rather than 'the car' for such lousy times. That's fine - I ain't no spring chicken anymore. But, the Z06 next to me in one race only got me by a couple of tenths.

Couple of Runs

The last C5 run (up against stock Rustang) was my 17 yr old kid. Never been to the track before and never allowed to jump all over my car, but even still not bad for the kids first time out!

Good Luck

my first time out when my C5 was only catback and blackwing resulted in 13.4 at 106, with 2.1 60 ft times on runflats, hoping for 12's might leave you dissapointed im afraid..

One good thing is the run flats are gone!
