Examine the brake pads/rotors for excessive wear, look at tire wear, look under the car to see if it has bottomed out and damaged the areas where the fenders bolt to the frame under the car.
Open the clutch resevoir and see if the fluid is clear or black. This will tell you is the previous owner was meticulous when it comes to avoiding the sticking clutch issue.
(Please PM RANGER for info on this issue)
Does the car smell like it was smoked in?
Look under the front end where there are two black braces sticking down, are they bent or just scratched?
How is the lower body paint? Any rock chips? Especially in front of the rear brake cooling ducts.
Look for axle leaks especially on drivers side........
there's a start for you..............as far as haggling........or dickering.......I usually always buy from a private owner but with a dealer...I found they are more likely to make deals and haggle more at the end of the month when they see they need mroe sales to make a goal or to get one car off the lot to put another one or two on.
If I go to a dealer, I will also typically pay thru the nose.
If you locate a vehicle with GMPP, that is fantastic because GMPP get more expensive when you jump from 23999 miles to 24k. Almost doubles. Several supporting venders here who give a neat discount on GMPP. Keep in mind that if you buy a car that is still eligble for GMPP, it must have 3 more months and 3,000 miles to go prior to expiration of older GMPP. If you are buying car and then adding a new GMPP policy (only if car is within 50,000 miles), you don't need to worry about 3 months and 3k miles.
I have recently checked the facts on the qualifications on the GMPP, and it goes like this...........The original 36/36 starts on it's in-service date (the day the car was purchased by 1st owner) You can obtain additional extended warranty all the way up to 35,999 miles or the same day the cvg expires on time. The "Major Guard" cvg is the "bumper to bumper" level of cvg, I personaly would not go any lower on level of cvg. What ever length of cvg you decide to get it's time will start on the day you purchase the policy (not like it used to be, before 2003 the cvg started all the way back at the in-service date) Definitely check into the members here on the forum that can help with the pricing I have seen some absolutely incredible prices for cvg on here.
If you are past the 36/36 then you will have to go "after market" which will have B2B available upto 49,999 miles or 5 model years old............Just make sure you do your home work on them to make sure they are a good company (and there are some out there) I have heard Warranty Direct can do the Z model, and they are a pretty good company..........expect them to quote you about $2700-$3500 depending on how many years you get.................but the guys on here that do the GMPP have quoted WAY lower than that.............
By the way I got my 03 Z March of 2005 with 1400miles and paid 38k
just as a compairison...................I say try to get them down 1k-2k more and you'll never be sorry........

just kidding man it's a great ride no matter what colour
