I am getting ready to put an exhaust on my 97 A4. I am almost definatly going with the borla setup just want to know if there is any difference in sound between the two tip and the four tip setup. Also I found a borla setup without any mufflers just straight back from the cats, (about $400 cheaper) what does this sound like? Do you think it would be too loud for a DD. Thanks for the help, this is the best site for Vette advice.
the straight pipes are the borla xr1 racing exhaust...been trying to find someone that had them as well...hope someone answers...
To help you a little, you obviously like it a little loud or you would not be looking at stingers...what you really want to ask is how the resonance on the inside of the car is ESPECIALLY around 2000 rpms with the stingers or xr1's...
that is what really sets all of the aftermarket apart from each other is loudness BOTH in and out...
The Borlas without mufflers are like cutouts - VERY loud at anywhere near WOT and almost defibitely not good for DD work, IMO.
The 2 and 4-tip sound levels are very similar.C5s without the pup-cats are a bit louder than those that have them. I've had my Stingers for quite a few years now and still enjoy them 3 times a week - highly recommended!

The Borla straight pipes will be loud, especially if you are running headers. Also, the Borla XR1 system is NOT the same as Borla staight pipes. The XR1 system has a single chamber muffler before the H-pipe (or xpipe if you have one already) and the XR1 will not be as loud as the straights. Speaking from experience.
Hey sounds great! Question, is that stock except for stingers or do you have an after market xpipe on as well or headers? Just curious because I really like the sound but wanted to know what your exact setup was with that...
Here's a clip of my C5 with Borla Stingers (twin pipe) before and after the addition of a custom cam and long-tube headers, etc. It also includes a segment recorded from the driver's seat. Hope this helps...
BTW - This set-up is LOUD and has the typical drone that can be a little much on long trips. I've learned to live with it by keeping the RPMs out of the "bad" range during highway cruising. I absolutely love the sound when it's time to play. It sounds awesome under heavy throttle and high RPMs. I call it "V-8 Therapy".

I just had the Borla Stinger with the round quad tips installed on a 2000 coupe a few days ago. It sound great. During startup, idle and acceleration, people will notice you. During cruising, it's not that bad and you can carry on a conversation without screaming. My friend who has a 2003 50th Anniversary Z06 likes my Borla better than his stock titanium exhaust. His was loud but the Borla is louder and deeper. He's looking into getting one himself. I also replaced the stock air intake with a Blackwing. You can definitely feel the increase in performance also...It left about 50+ feet of skid mark on takeoff (and this was with an automatic transmission).
i have the borla straights and theyre loud but nowhere near as loud as everybody is claiming with the stock h and manifold.. i drove my z28 with a cutout in place of the cat, about a foot after the manifold, for about 2 years.. now that car is loud, and it sounds mean as hell.. i plan on eventually gettin headers and an offroad x to try and make the vette even meaner... as of now, all that crap about ''i cant talk on my phone'' or ''hear the radio'' is bs.. get a better phone or turn up the radio!
