This is one of the oldest debates around here - V1 vs Escort 8500. There is no right or wrong answer. If you find one that you are happy with that performs to your expecations, and most importantly gives you sufficient warning to keep you from getting a ticket - then you bought the best.
There have been long ranging arguments about form vs. function, range, easy of use, etc. Buy the one with which you are most comfortable.
The Cobra has been pretty good. It warned me a few times this weekend even near a school where there was a posted radar gun for the school zone. Still I think your best defense is your own eyes. Happy so far but we'll see. BTW when you p/u laser, its too late. its a straight beam of light and doesnt pulse a signal. So, watch out! This model is also suppossed to be immune to radar detector detectors.

When the Valentine came out, nothing could touch it. Mike Valentine was a co-founder of Cincinnatti Microwave, the makers of the Escort and Passport line, and started his own company. The only thing that was equal was the original escorts (which he helped design) but they were X only. The valentines design, dates back 15years with only minor updates.
However, after using the 8500 and V1, my own opinion is that the V1 is dated. It's heavy, needs to be repackaged, and looks clunky. That's all just nit-picky stuff. During use, though, it sets off so many false alarms, that its usability starts to be called into question. It may have the best range, but what good is that when it is constantly "crying wolf". Your area may be different, but around here, that's just my experience.
I bought the Solo and used it for the first time this weekend. Worked excellent. I love the "no wire" feature. I have many vehicles and it works great.
I have the Escort 9500. I have been very happy with it. I was on the HotRod Power tour a few weeks ago and I did about 3000 miles in a week. It saved me countless times (I stopped counting at about 12).
One word of caution, I made custom brackets to hold it in my two main vehicles. You need to be careful to push the detector far enough forward in the windshield and not block the GPS antenna with the bracket.
I have both the V1 and 8500 and they are both great detectors, but I love the arrows. Now that I have had a taste of the arrows, I can't deal with the 8500 anymore. It goes off and I am looking for the LEO everywhere, which the V1, I can see which direction he is in and that rocks.
I went to a local swapmeet and I saw a radar detector upside down. How much is that (I know it was a good model)...I see that it is an escort 8500 x50 in great condition (missing bracket only) so my heart starts pumping..$25 he says...Then I say $20..Then he says no that is $129 new...I quickly pull out $25 and thank him for the good deal...He says that is a good price and I say yes it is..He says I'm welcome and that's that. I bought an oem bracket and cups for $8.50 shipped and then an invisicord.
