What are your thoughts on mixing different tire brands for the front and rear. If I get tires that are equally rated and have about the same ratings, would it effect the handling?

If they are equal in ratings then no handling wont be affected.
As before,
Providing they are the same tires on each side of the axel, then should be no problem.
I don't believe it as stictly true to have all 4 tires the same make & type.
Although, if you were going to replace all 4, then by all means.
Otherwise, just replacing 2, be it front or rear, then mixing them shouldn't be an issue, providing same speed rating, loading.
The potential problem with mixing brands concerns the method of manufacturing the tire. Different tires may/will have different scrub rates, (the angle of the tire away from straight ahead at which a time it will start to slip sideways as you turn), which can cause understeer/oversteer between front and rear. This could be anything from a non issue to dangerous. Just be careful to learn that before your vette hugs a tree.

Good point. I'll make sure I'm not pushing the limits At this point in time, I just need affordable tires for my commute.
Huh. I wish I would've known this before replacing all 4 tires when the 2 fronts had lots of tread left. Tire Rack suggested strongly against it when I wanted to run with Kumhos in front and Michelin PS's in the rear (until the fronts wore out - then switch them to Michelin PS's as well).
This is the situation that I am in right now. I had a set of four Michelin runflats but I fugged up both rear tires. I plan to switch over to Kumhos, so I bought two Kumho runflats for the rear and left the two 50% tread Michelins on the front. I'll swap those for Kumhos when they are sufficiently worn. Some might say that this is ghetto...but I don't need to waste several hundred dollars on unnecessary tires.
I think that if you spend $$$$ on a high performance sports car, risking degradation in handling by mixing tires is not a good idea. AH will probably compensate but its a problem I wouldn't induce.
I know for a fact that its not good to mix different types of runflats. The sidewall stiifness is different and can only have an adverse effect on handling.
I may do it for my DD but the Vette gets reshod all round when its time.
