Periodically while driving the "active handling" message comes on. Then even less frequently the "Service Active Handling" warning stays on until I clear the code.
Also sometimes, when I just lightly touh the brake pedal, I feel and hear the antilock start to chaddar (one of the front wheels?)then somtimes that active handling message shows up momentarily.
Another thing is sometimes while driving on the expressway, the rearend feels like its loose or like one of the brakes is being applied without my foot near the brake pedal.
Here's The Codes C1287 H And C1288 H. I see from other threads this could be caused by a bad steering wheel sensor or a misalinged steering wheel? I think my steering wheel is OK.

Noticed my steering wheel is off maybe 2 degrees at the most when going down a straight road. But that could be because of a crown on the roads. Also when I thow a code sometimes I only get a 1287 and other times I only get the 1288, and then again I get both?????????????
What's going on??????? Anyone had this?
I think the lack of responses indicate that no one has experience with your current condition. There is a guy here very experienced with the electronics of a Corvette and he may be able to help, I believe his name is Curly Bill and hopefully he read this.
If I can come up with his full name I'll let you know..

You're looking for Bill Curlee...
He's really good - he's also got a sticky post on electrical gremlins in the C5 Tech forum. Look for him there, and good luck.

It's possible that some members pass over these "service active handling" threads because there are so many of them posted.
I had that code come up, took it to a dealer and found that the module was bad. At the time i had 10,000 miles on the car. To fix it was $3200.00. Because of the low miles, they fixed it, but I had to make a copay as outlined by chevrolet. Each case is handled differently.
I believe those sensors are in the rack. I dont believe they are serviceable parts(whole rack required). Loose feeling from rear can be cured by replacing swaybars and end links. Does rear always feel loose or just on certain shock settings??
I can feel the ABS shudder when i lightly press the brake pedal. I will get random "Active Handling" messages on my console. Now here's my story...
This all started after I did a cam swap. I also had tires that were going bald in the rear. I've since replaced the tires and still have the issue every now and then (random). Of course I also put 275s up front instead of the 265s so the tire height has been changed SLIGHTLY.
It seems that the ABS activation ONLY occurs during breaking, but the "Active Handling" message will occur during normal driving. I've noticed that my steering wheel is about 2-3* "off" when driving in a straight line and the car tends to pull to the left. I'm going to get an alignment done very soon to see if that is all it is.
I have bookmarked this post and will update when I've figured this out. I have a feeling we suffer from the same problem. Have you done anything to your car? Removed the steering rack, need new tires, got new tires, etc, etc?
Same problem here on an 04 with 58k on the clock. I have the same codes and have for a while. I only get the messages after about 45-60 or more driving so it seems to be temperature related. It is getting worse so I need to get it fixed.
I've had my EBCM replaced when the system was tripping out. At that time I had a C1214. It turned out to be the EBCM module was bad and giving low voltages causing the trip
I've had similar problems to you recently although I'm not getting codes. I've been getting Active Handling captions in conditions that really don't need it. I noticed that its mostly happening when I apply the brakes very gently.
Its not at the stage where I'm worried yet but I was also thinking wheel sensor. I would say its not EBCM related so no need to go for the $$$$ fix, nor is it the wheel misaligned. There are posts out there describing how to change the sensor. Its a $55 part and a few hours to replace it.
Probably the lack of responses reflects that its an unusual snag.
i had this problem. i replaced my steering wheel position sensor myself and that was 3 years ago and it continues to work great!!!
1288 and 1287 relate to the steering wheel position sensor. It's located at the base of the steering column, against the firewall. The connector is relatively easy to get to if you want to check that and for loose wires. To replace it requires removing the steering column. I just picked mine up from the dealer yesterday after having this repair done, since I didn't want to tackle messing with the steering column. Part was 70.00...labor 379.00...ouch...tax tag title...cost me 500.10!
First off- thanks to all the posters who showed how to replace the steering wheel position sensor.
It took exactally 3 1/2 hours but I did it. A real PITA, but I saved about $350. I drove about 100 miles since replaceing the sensor and all is well. After haveing my head and arms in a place ment only for legs for 2 hours my back is killing me.
Also anyone going to do this and has telescopic steering column- you can't get the column out all the way. But you can get it out just enough to slide the sensor off.
I never would of tried this without the advice from this fourm.
