Good explanation in the link posted by dw99vette. The hard part is getting it all out with a flush. The stuff tends to stick in the tubing bends in the evap and condensor. There are special filters that can be installed in the hoses to help trap the gunk. I hope this isn't a problem with your car. It requires a real expert to fix it right, not the guy at the local stealership.
