You can get by without using the pucks at the front frame slots. Too protect the frame and the fender use a 6 inch long piece of 2x4 between the jack and the frame. It fits nicely and spreads the weight of the car across a wider cross section. I did this for 3 years with my 97. Didn't damage the frame until I started using the pucks which do not have the cross section and the weight of the car dented the frame upwards where the frame sat on the puck. GM only recommends using the pucks when using a lift and then only in the rear slots since there isn't a lot of room for the lift pad at that location. There is plenty of room for a lift pad at the front slots. If you want you can jack the car high enough using the front or rear slots to get both the wheels on that side off the ground. That is how I got jack stands under the car.
I learned the hard way that the answer to that question is yes. Bought my C5 about 3 years ago-out of state. Went around the car with a fine tooth comb-not a scratch. Went for an inspection. Didn't know about the "pucks" (neither did the inspection station) they jacked the car up at the proper points and after getting home I noticed a hair line crack where it was lifted. It was repaired but lesson learned.
I guess this mildly NOOB post turned out to be pretty informative actually
I put a set of rocker rails on mine and now it can be jacked anywyere along the edge w/o cracking stuff...there are a few different kinds of rails...I got mine from Andy at A&A...I also got frame savers at the same time(package deal)...best protective investment I have done so far
Do they usually include these pucks with the vehicle at point of sale? Where is the best place to get them? I was going to attempt this without the pucks. Bad idea?
Jason, real bad idea...you gonna crack the rocker panels!! The pucks are available from alot of the online vendors or search the forum, I've seen insturctions on how to make them yourself using regular old hockey put. But don't lift with out them ...you'll be sorry.
This may be a dumb question, but how do the pucks help if the jack only hits steel? The lifting pad on my floor jack is smaller than the cut out in the body panels for the tie down eyes.
