So I already know I'm running 13.2 @ 107 mph on my high mileage automatic C5. It has the 2.73 base gear. Well my "buddy" just got a 2003 M3 from his dad. It was for his HS grad present. So now he's all in my face, very arrogant and now telling me how much faster it is than his old 6 speed LT1 Camaro he used in HS. Now thinks he could "wipe me clean" with his new M3. He thinks he could cut into the 12s with it... Well... to settle the score we are planning to race in Bradenton next week. I do not wanna street race him of course because its illegal and I'm just itching for some predicted results. So what are the likely results, assuming he can drive? I did research and found out that car weighs 3400 lbs, has 333 hp - 7900 rpms, 262 ft-lbs of torque - 4900 rpms. Does 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds...
Looks like the M3 has a little more weight and a little less horsepower. You have an auto all you have to do is point it. I think he will have a hard time unless he has done a lot of racing in that car.
It will be very close but I think you will win if you put down a 13.2 you have a trorque advantage even though hp is similar.
I had a run with a BMW Z4 M which is the same engine as the M3. This took place at the drag strip because street racing is not allowed on here. Although he got a slight jump on me at the start the Vette soon closed the gap at the top end of the track.

Last time I was rode in an M3 was about 4 years ago. And I thought it was way faster than anything I've ever been in. I'd hope I can take it, though my Vette is ranked as average on the 2007 sports car list. Seems to me like every "high sports car" nowadays runs very low 13s and better...
I've been seeing brand new EVOs in the track with a few bolt-ons run down lots of cars costing twice as much...

this may be true, but what is the price for having to be seen in one of those unsightly things. m3s are sharp no doubt. i guess i just don't care for the evos style at all.
I'm a member of the M3 forum as well (I like M3's too) so there is often a lot of talk over there about how many members think an M3 will outrun a C5. Yes, I do defend the C5's honour with pride .
My brother has a '01 M3 coupe, and yes it is quick. We haven't had a chance to line them up yet at the track, but he already concedes that my car will probably edge him out. I have a coupe MN6 with the more aggressive 3:42 rear end.
Its really all about the numbers. You weigh less, have more hp & torque. If there are any factors going against you its your 2:73 gears. He might get you out of the hole, so make sure your launch is damn near perfect.
If he just got it, I bet he isn't very good at driving it, yet.
Either way I would pick your C5 over the M3. I do like the M3s and they are pretty quick for what they are, but the weight and power difference he has and the fact that you are in a punch in go (less likely to miss a gear ) that is an advantage to you.
I drove it today and did every bit of 0-60 mph in what the C&D say, 4.8 seconds. Got it to 100 mph in 14 seconds and that it shifting it as fast as I can. I took it to 8000 rpm in every gear. Its a very quick car, but I'm afraid I'll probably still own him in the quarter since I can muster mid 13s and trap consistently at 107 mph. I can safely predict that car will run a 14.1 at 102 mph....

According to the numbers I've found....stock he should run around 13.4 at 102 MPH. Not the numbers you're turning, so you have the edge there. Plus, those numbers are taken from times with professional drivers. So, unless he has lots of hours behind the wheel on the strip, point your car straight, turn a good re-act time, and smile.
