Kinda' long thread - '04 Z , 50k miles, 2 weeks ago cruising down the highway, "Service Active Handling..." message appeared in the DIC. It has been happening almost daily now and I also noticed the cruise control disengaging on it's own now - about 5 times in a 2 hour trip. The cruise disengagement doesn't appear to happen when the "Service Active Handling...." message appears, but I bet the two are related. As a test, I turned off AH/TC and the "Service Active Handling.." message appeared again this morning, but I did not lose Cruise Control.
There's 1 TCS DTC code (C1288-H - Steering Position Sensor Circuit) and a bunch of "Lost Communication with..." codes in the IPC system (U1016, U1040, U1064, U1088, U1160 & U1176 - all History codes).
I first thought of a sensor issue, but with all of these Loss of Communication DTCs could it be a wiring or plug interface issue...???
Any insight would be appreciated.
Fred
Look at the electrical sticky at top; Pull the codes on your DIC and post them on here, and (like millennium02 said in his reply in c5 gen), do a search. There have been hundreds of posts about this.
I have a 2002 Vert and it happened to me and it was the computer that is linked to the ABS System. Took it to the dealer and it cost me around a grand to fix it. Since I got it changed no problems or messages.
Normally I'd be thinking that one of the modules is on its way south. With a steering position sensor that could in fact be the problem.
However, the EBCM is very voltage dependent. If it senses a reduction in voltage it throws a flag. Also that fact that the code is clearing is good. At least you don't have the dreaded C1214
With all those loss of comms codes you may be having a battery problem. Hows your battery? If its ready for replacement the first thing I'd try is a new battery and see if it fixes things.
Thanks for the replies folks. I cleared all the codes this AM and got the "Service AH...." message on the way to work. I went in to retrieve the codes while I was driving. System TCS had codes C1287 C and
C1288 C - BOTH CURRENT. So looks like I'll be ording a steering position sensor next. Thx.

You could clean up the grounds to see if that helps but I think your diagnosis may be correct
I just got a C1288 H code today in my "04 Z. According to my code listing, a C1288 is a RR excessive wheel speed variation that would indicate a wheel sensor issue not a steering wheel sensor. Now I'm really confused.
