Default A4 gear indicator no worky

No matter what gear I'm in the red indicator stays put on "3". It doesn't have any other effect on the car - but it's annoying and I have to pay attention more - so I don't go in reverse unintentionally.

Any ideas how to fix this? I'm sure it's not as easy as putting some
Techron into the fuel tank....

Its a while since I had the console in pieces but I seem to remember it was a mechanical display based on the position of the shifter. Theres a linkage on the side of the shifter that moves a colored tell tale. If its disconnected the colored tab may not move to the correct place.

It may be worth pulling the console to take a look and make sure everything's still connected.

This is what you need

Your going to have to remove the console and radio bezel to get the boot off to see what is broke or moved out of place. Not hard, just remember there is a screw behind the temp sensor lid next to the key.

Thanks for all the replies. I took all this apart not long ago to fix the A/C LED's - guess I'll have to do it once more.

And thanks for the instructions - guess I'll have to keep them handy.
