The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
MHO, I like the idea of a single super sub. I have an IDMAX 12 powered at 1200watts in a custom 1.2 fiberglass box I built in the back. It can reset your heartbeat and is just as loud at 20hz as it is at 80hz.
The rear of the car, the corvette logo, despite EXTENSIVE sound deadening in the car, flexes in and out as the sub plays. That said, I usually listen to it at about 30-50% volume. Around there, it blends perfectly with my Dynaudio front stage. The IDMAX sounds extremely good.

Here's a pic of the work in progress. It barely fits in there, depth wise.
The JL W7 is also an excellent choice for a great sounding, but powerful sub. I like the IDMAX more though, I think it sounds nicer, and its cheaper too.

mcgile, I do not have pics of the install since I did not install this one.
I have a 15" rockford fosgate p3 and a 1000watt zapco pushing it and it "slaps". Its really not even fun listening to it full blast after a while. I like it though.
A supporting vendor here makes a flush false floor box to house 2 12's....http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ht=thesubfloor
and he is local. he can change it up for you as well.
good luck.

* Volume is too high/Gains are set wrong
* Cabin gain
* Improperly designed enclosure
* Poor equipment design
* Mistaking low end response for muddiness
It is not; however, a side effect of the size of the woofer, if the woofer has an adequate motor design, which pretty much any modern woofer does.
Any amount of overpowering bass will begin to sound muddy, when it drowns out your midbass. So going to smaller, quieter speakers sounds better. You can turn down the big sub's volume and get the same effect, AND have better low end response. Assuming the enclosure is appropriate. Consider that the bottom of your bass note is 120db and the top half of it is only 105db. Doesn't take a genius to figure out why it sounds funny.
That said, there's nothing wrong with 8s. You can usually get plenty of bass out of them to blend with your front stage, at the expense of low end response. But you get the benefit of taking up MUCH less room, and much less weight.
I like my music to be just as loud at 20hz as it is at 80, this is why I'm using a 12. Also, I like headroom. That's why my front speakers see a total of nearly 700watts, and the sub is on a 1200w diet. You can always turn it down.
