When I attended a brother's wedding a couple of months ago, my aunt, who I haven't seen in many years, informed me that her son (my cousin, who is 49 years old), just got home after needing a hip replacement. I asked her how that could happen, knowing that he and I are the same age. She said that he was an avid runner and it eventually wore him out, literally.
I was a dedicated long-distance runner throughout high school and even though I was as light as a feather, had many injuries from shin splints, to hip amf knee issues. When I graduated, I limited my exercise-specific aerobic activities to biking and cycle-related machines.
Be forewarned. After you heal, refrain from running on pavement; it will pound your joints into submission, sooner or later!
