the last radar detector I ever owned was back in 1981... it was a FOX unit that was remote mountable. The detector unit I nounted under the hood... the control box I mounted inside an air duct.
Even connected it to my cruise-control; so what the detector went off, it cancelled the cruise control (faster than I could get to the brake)
Worked well and was invisable to prying eyes walking by the car.
Anyways; 27 years later... what detectors can be configured similarly; detector and display/controls seperate ???

I believe Valentine has a remote unit, of course, Valentine products are a bit pricey. I saw a posting some time ago where one of the members mounted his remote display unit on his HUD. I've also seen the Valentine remote display built into the rear view mirror. Sorry I don't have any of the links readily available for these options, but at least it will give some ideas to work with.
Valentine has a remote display but NOT a remote detector. The downside for a remote detector, presumably, is that it's much lower thereby reducing the range. Valentine recommends mounting the detector as high as possible in the windshield.

On my coupe, I was thinking of mounting it on the "hoop" that's between the targa top and rear hatch. That would give clear view of both front & rear... but physical operation would be difficult. So that's where the remote control unit would come in handy.
BTW, tha Passport 9500i with GPS false lockout is very interesting... but doesn't appear to be available in a remote mount config

Thinking about mounting mine in the same location (and sort of molding it in so that it would be virtually invisible). I've got a guy trying to mount the remote display in a homelink mirror for me. We'll see how it goes.

Hey Mike,
The 9500 seems very interesting. But I'd read up on it, since I've seen a lot of complaints about it not working near as well as the 8500 units. Still on the fence myself.
Buy a Valentine 1. The features are great, its update-able via sending it back to the company, simply put, its the best. Mine has paid for itself at least 3 times over. I will be rigging a remote display set up into my Vette when I pick it up next weekend.

when you say "rigging"... do you mean a DIY remote mount setup (that Valentine does not offer one themselves) ?
You seem to want something better or at least different than the V1 & remote display; but for what it is worth I have been using the V1 for over eight years and it is worth its weight in gold.
Not one ticket - even when captured by instant-on laser - just slam on your brakes and the fuzz won't be able to read your speed until you let off because your speed changes so fast - just be sure no one is behind you!!
I have the remote display ($39.00 option) mounted in my C5 on the little "shelf "in front of the dash guage on the lower left (oil pressure?), and the main unit mounted on the right of the mirror up as high as it will go on the inside windshield. It is totally invisible from the exterior and works like a champ in my convertible.
I would not even consider any other detector, the V1 has no competition.
I used an Escort Passport SR1 on my '99 and on my '04 when I first bought it. I mounted the main unit inside my front air duct and it had a rear unit that mounted to the top of the license plate. It worked great for me, though I don't know how it stacks up against other competition. But it was totally hidden with a nice, small head unit I mounted on the steering column. Wish I could find the pictures...
