Default third brake lite installation

Hi guys, I thought installing the brake lite would be easy. I thought I could go thru the trunk, NOT! So I took the back up lites out and could grab the lite, but how is it mounted and how does it come out. I assume it is screwed in but how do you get to it, or am I just car dumb? No comments please I got a led lite and would love to put it in, any help out there? Doug

the factory CHMSL is a LED unit (at least on the coupe it is).

easiest way I have found is to remove the inner two tail-lights and reach in from there.

I changed mine thru the backup light opening. There is a screw on the bottom of it (just one I beleive, but I could be wrong) that was easy enough to take out and put back without looking in.

Take your time grasshopper, you can do it.

2 screws, do not drop them. $8.78 screw from dealer. I have a procedure written with pics if you still need it. Let me know .

Here's a pic of what you can't see. Camera was stuck in left opening after removing license plate assembly and backup lights. Camera is pointed upward at the 3rd light. You can see the CORVETTE lettering impressed into the rear fascia.

My guess is, you'll release the black clip holding the wiring harness going to the purple module then unscrew the two black screws that can be seen in the picture.

This picture shows rear fascia after removing license mounting and rear backup lights. This will offer you the easiest access to 3rd brake light.

Good luck!

My friend, you have answered a question that has been nagging at me! My 3rd brake light isn't quite flush, it is pushed in more on one side than the other and I haven't been able to figure out how to access it. Your pictures have solved my problem, looks like I just need to loosen one of the those nuts holding it in and give it a nudge. Thank you.

Nice job rickko!

BTW, that wouldn't be a third brake light "blink, blink" module I see in your pic would it? I have one and love it.

Yep! That's where the pictures came from. I took them when I installed the blink-blink-blink light module. I was the guinea pig for Webelectric before they marketed them for the C5. Not only did the product work fine but Webelectric liked the pics so much they used them in their instructions.

I believe there's federal law covering that.

Here's what I understand it to be:
Although the CHMSL can blink... it can't continously blink.

The WebElectric product works in this way... upon brake pedal pressure it will blink the CHMSL a couple of times, then come on solid. If after releasing the brake pedal - then reapplying it within 15 seconds or earlier, it skips the blinking routine and goes directly to solid-on. In order for the next application of brake to get the blinking, 10 to 15 seconds of time must lapse between pedal applications.

And as I understand it, the operation of the WebElectric CHMSL blinker module meets the federal guidelines.

Oh thanks a bunch Tim! Now I'm gonna have to watch out for every FBI guy out there that pulls up behind me at a traffic light! (Mine blinks 5 times each and every time I apply the brake)

Thanks for the reply. This seems like a cool mod with some added safety also. I did a search and found it under WebElectricProducts.com (I think) third light blinker?

I'm more than willing to believe that it's easier to get at the CHMSL that way than through the taillight holes...after you get the plate/backup-light assembly removed.
But knowing how easy it is to break the tabs on the license plate frame, I think I'd try through the taillight holes first if I ever had to do it. Just sayin'.
