Default A/C does not cool well at a stop???

My A/C system is not cooling a well at a stop or in slow traffic. On the road it will freeze you out. The refrigerant is full, the the auto climate control head is new, and all the actuators are functioning properly. What else could cause this?

Thanks for any suggestions,

It's time for a new compressor. We have a Jetta that was doing that and after installtion of the compressor everything is fine.

Check to make sure the electric fan (right / passenger side) is on and working fine.

I'll check it. I assume it runs all the time the A/C is on. How can you check/clean the A/C condenser. I have heard that trash can accumulate between it and the radiator.

The right A/C fan cycles on and off. Is it supposed to run all the time with the A/C on?

Airflow through the condenser makes a big difference!! When you say the right side fan cycles, how often? I thought they BOTH come on and STAY ON when the AC is turned on??? Or is it just the right side?

Also, do you use re-circulate when stopped? Doing this will help the air get much colder because it is not drawing in the outside, (and much warmer) air. It makes a big difference.

Let us know what you find!!

In my driveway the right fan would stay on for a couple of minutes and then shut down for at least 30-45 seconds and then come back on. The left fan did not turn on at all during that time. The engine was not at full operating temp. I'll leave it in recirculate at a stop an see if it stays cool. I checked refrigerant again and if anything, it is barely over full. I think the left fan turns on in an overtemp situation. Can anyone verify this?

To get the best cooling and keep outside & bad air out, I always use re circulate. Why try to cool 90-100 (diesel- pollen) air when you can cool 75-80 degree quicker.
When you are stopped it is CRITICAL to have the AC fan running because all the heat is building up in the AC condenser.

Good point.

Also, sounds like your fan is running properly. Mine will cycle on and off, but more on than off on a hot day. Rarely does the left fan come on. I am pretty sure those temps are set in the PCM...

I would not recommend going to AutoZone or WallyWorld and getting a a can of R134 and try to DIY fix to the a/c system. Could easily do more damage than good. Overfill of refrigerant will cause it to blow hot because the hi-pressure switch will kick off the compressor to try to keep it from frying it. I know this from previous experience!

Just last week took mine to the drag strip. Was in low 90's and temps started climbing on the radiator to around 220* while waiting in line. Oddly I found that turning on the A/C kicked in the fan and within just a couple of minutes it brought it down to around 190*, then turn the A/C off and made my run. 14.2@106 - not bad for hi-temp run.

Good Luck ----->

On my A/C gauges the pressure reads 46 psi. That is only 1 pound over optimum. Should I remove some refrigerant and run it a couple of pounds low? I checked two other C5's today and both of them had the fans cycling on a off with the A/C on max. The passenger side fan is easy to see running. On the drivers side one I had to hold a sheet of paper by it to verify it was turning on.

Need to have more info?

What is the high side pressure
What is the outside air temp

Are you having the doors open ac on recycle max fan?

What is the air temp comming out of the dash?
