I would leave this part alone. I can't believe that its removal would give you any "seat of the pants" performance gains. If anything you take the chance of screwing something up. Put your time and energy (and money) towards something that will truly make a difference.
A member of the LS1 team once said that it made only 2hp difference on the LS6... so that means almost no gain on a LS1.
In other words, there's probably zero gain unless you're over 400 flywheel HP.
Some report driveability problems when descreening. Others don't have any problems.
If you're under 400 flywheel HP... Is it worth the risk ?
Exactly what my tuner said, since I'm +400 I'm descreening, but the tune must also be adjusted as well.
He also said the aftermerket ones you should stay away from too. Throw lots of codes and drivability issues.
In the book I got, How to Build Hight-Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8's by Will Handzel. It says that the 02 Z06 doesn't have a screen in its MAF. I'm not entirely sure if it will help you or not but this book says its ok.
I just purchased one today for my C4 from Mid America. They are on sale for $39.99 for the 1994-2000 model. It may not do much but if I don't like it I can always put the stock housing back on. Also below is a link to an article where it was tested on a C4.

Descreened mine and after my heads and cam install I kept throwing a code that dealt with the air flow through the MAF, grab a stock MAF with the screen, it went away and I have never had issues since. It really isn't worth it.
