Default Moving to Texas

Leaving NJ to go to the great state of Texas... (Austin area). So fill me in. Do I need a front plate? Is there a State inspection? (I have no Cat's), octane of super unleaded (91 or 93)? What is the best gas station (mobile, chevron, etc...)? Car shows and Cruse nights in Austin? Corvette clubs in Austin? Performance Shops? (or do I need to run to LG up in Dallas?)

Welcome to TEXAS!!
I live in Austin and it is a great city.
The state law requires front plate, but I rarely see fellow vette owners have the front plate installed.
There is state inspection and the octane of super unleaded is 93.
I don't know what you meant by best gas station, but we have (among the first-tiers) Chevron, Shell, Phillips, Conoco plus many other non-first-tiers. We have great day and night drive courses in hill country. 2222 and 2244 in town are great and the road heading to Lago Vista is excellent. We have Long Horn club in town. I'm still new to the vette community (my first vette history started 6 weeks ago), so I don't know much about thw car show or performance shop.
I hope you like Austin, the heart of Texas.

thank you for the responses. I see there is a state inspection, is it a safety inspection or safety and emissions?

It is safety and emission, but the emission is not very strict I believe.
I have 2000 coupe with Vortex and didn't have problem passing it.

SO they do not lift physically looking for Cats, but just do the OBDII plug in test?

I actually don't know whether they look for the CATS.
I did not look at it when they do the inspection on my car.
I always go to the same place and it is really small inspection station with only one guy working.
I don't think they have a lifter to check underneath of the car.

The emission test is the OBDII, but in the safety inspection, one requirement is that they confirm that all emission equipment is in place. They are to confirm that cats are there for cars back to 1984. Check here:

for more info.

Welcome to Texas. Safety inspection is required in every county. State requirement. Emission testing is done in certain countys. I believe Travis county (Austin) requires it. I live 25 miles from Austin in Hayes county, and it is not required here. The good thing is no taxes on wages, but the property taxes are a killer.

yeah but 3% on a $150,000 house, sure as hell beats my 2% property taxes on the same house in California for $400,000. I'm moving to DFW area in 4 years when we can pay cash.

3% = $4500 per year
2% = $8000 per year almost double

I bought my Vette in Austin (Corvette Country) and it is a great Vette town. Dallas is also fantastic. I always had my front plate filler on, but I have it velcroed with industrial 3M backed velcro. If I get pulled over just for that I explain that I was taking pictures and forgot to remove it after I was done. The filler plate comes right off and the plate is underneath it.

Best of luck in Texas, I'm sure you will enjoy it!

I have no cats and passed inspection. It is a visual and the inspectors I've seen never check. The place didn't have a lift either. When I had my vette inspected, I let the guy know up front that my car was modified and had no cats, but it would pass no problem. I think the smaller, hole in the wall type inspection place is going to be less strict on this.

No front plate here either, but I was pulled over in 2001 for it. I was speeding, but the cop didn't get me with the radar, so he pulled me over and was "lenient" by just giving me the front plate ticket.
