Ok, given current conditions the only sensible (and perhaps obligation) for any sports-car buyer that can afford it appears to be to go out and buy a 2002 Black Z06.
My (limited) understanding is that the vette is the *only* American car that boasts mostly all-american parts in a mostly all-american assembled plant, unlike other GM products. PLEASE correct me here if I got it wrong, seriously.
Else I could buy another fine German product and the tax would help the economy :)
The real question though, most applicable to this week's economy: what is a reasonable deal for a new Z06? Seems we are all hurting. I don't want to spend more $$ than I have to, and I can wait a few months for that matter.
But if buying now could help just a grain, particularly if dealers need to unload cars that have been sitting or can move fresh ones and take advantage of holdbacks... is it unthinkable to offer mid forties to a dealer?
And not that it should matter, but one of my best car deals was in the midst of a Hurricane warning buying an SUV... have been waiting to test drive a vette for over a week now, but now that Hurricane Michelle is on our sights the right incentive could get it sold withoud a test drive... (S.Florida guy here)
Oh, and back to the ramble about a black one - that would be the best contrast for the flag I am planning for it.
So what has been your best (recent) deal? Or what would you offer *today*?
I'm feeling patriotic, too. Otherwise, the M3 looks awfully good. I still haven't made up my mind 100%.
However, there's no way I'm overpaying for the car...no matter what it is. With 0%, they are moving pretty well down here in N. Texas where I live. At least that's what the dealers are telling me b/c they're saying MSRP + "market adjustment". Well, they can take that and....
Anyway, why a dealer wouldn't take $47k or so when the invoice is ~$43k + 3% holdback, etc is beyond me.
If I had 4-5 Z's sitting on my lot (with more due to come) and a serious buyer would make me $5-6k _today_, then I'd move the car. :D Maybe that's why I'm not a car dealer.
I would suggest buying from one of the supporting Vendors. I've heard some really good deals are going on right now.
Btw, I checked out the M3 and compared it to the Z06 when I went to buy. Hands down the Z06 was the best deal. Besides, I cannot get over the idea of anything with more than 2 seats being classified as a "sports car"!? If I wanted 4 seats then I'd buy a SUV as well - and I did. :D
Hey, just remember the blue of the flag goes first, as if it was on a pole being carried into battle.
Captain Todd Griffin, US Army, Infantry, Bravo Company "Death Dealers" :flag
Whoa, they've been asking for "market adjustments"? If that is the case I'm sure it won't be for long.
Love the M5/M3 as well, but somehow spending so much $$ on an M5 no longer seems right and while the M3 is fantastic it is still hard to get, more expensive and IMO not really the same type of car.
And Z06's are sitting in lots in this area after all...
If you get the Z06, you will absolutely love her. The M3 is nice, and the M5 nicer. A 911 seems like an exotic. BUT, they are not a Corvette. Up until recently (last couple of years) I was never a Vette person. Too big, not as fast as others... But the Corvette is an American Icon and is also the best darn sports car out there. A full 1.0 g on the skidpad, upper 60's on salomn and of course the 0-60 times in less than 4 seconds. All that sounds good on paper...but feels even better when looking through the windshield with HUD flashing high speeds and higher torque producing rpms. One drive and you're hooked.
Great car, great events and great prople...
I guess greed along with supply and demand is the answer. I searched for several months and only found 1 02 Z in a showroom at Muzi Chevrolet. I was just about to make the deal when the saleman tells me "the owner" wants 5 grand over sticker. I laughed and said no way and walked out. Two month later the same car is sitting in his showroom. I went to Kerbeck got a $1000 discount and was able to take advantage of the .9 % finance deal going on during Oct. We took some digital images of us with the car at Kerbeck And Emailed them to MUZI chevrolet. I guess I'll never grow up. :D
newme........your handle doesn't reveal your locale......
I live in N Texas, same as Wes.........
Around here....ALL '01's are H_I_S_T_O_R_Y............( and were selling at MSRP).........if you want one, you pay...........'02's, at 55k.............maybe 500.00 off.....
AND, it's only gonna get worse.......the holidays are upcoming, and BG is/will be shutting down, demand will stay high, and I don't frsee a slowing of purchases of them until AFTER January...........sooo.......depends on how bad you want one.........when the exceptionally low rates go up, I see the market getting more competitive.
I know that the 01's have been long gone, but there are some 02's out, listing at MSRP in the 50 range... no options but there are no real options for the Z06 as far as I can tell.
The 0% will likely go away mid Nov but I'm sure they'll throw a 3.9% or so at us, which is pretty decent to begin with.
You make it sound as if they stop production for a while every year? That would change the attitude towards MSRP. But out of principle I don't think I could pay over MSRP unless it was a totally emotional decision.
Also, happened to notice some barely used z06's listing in the VERY LOW 40's!! Scary on the depreciation!
Yep, lower prices...........do not look for this to continue either......unless the economy takes a MAJOR dump......then all bets are off on ANY auto........
The dealers that have the '02's, have fewer, and as I said....will be getting even less..through the end of the year.....
Expect to pay MSRP at least till after jan 1.......unless, the econo takes a much bigger hit.....
Then, if you want a cash deal........the pickings will be definitely in your favor, and flavor.........BUT, lets HOPE that does not come to pass :nonod:
That's just it. I have a sizeable down payment to make on the car. With 0.0% money should talk, BS should walk. If I walk into a dealer dead serious about buying a car and waving some hard earned green around...you'd figure they wouldn't be so stuck on "market adjustment".
If this is the car I end up deciding on, I will not pay that. Period. Maybe I'll have to go out of state. Fine. Obviously, I won't spend more in travel expenses than the difference in cost. ;)
I am not so sure I agree with your assessment on the current supply/demand issue. With the holidays coming, new car sales will slow down more if anything. Supply may be a bit low right now due to the great influx of sales due to 0%, but production hasn't stopped, and the dealers will be getting more and more cars. So supply will go back up, and I believe demand will drop off as the holidays get closer.
Just my $.02. Certainly this could be wishful thinking. Again, for me it really won't matter. I'll shop til I find the right deal, no matter the car I'm buying. :)

Wes, I thought so too....on the MORE inventory...........
But, I am seeing prices HOLD, and seeing LESS inventory....DFW, and ALL over the net.........
I agree, I never pay MSRP, never will......I did exactly what you are doing......
And, I made a good deal (for the area)..............
IF the bottom falls out in mid winter.......I will go and try to make ANOTHER deal.......... :yesnod: :yesnod:
As you said, cash talks, and :bs walks...................
FWIW, guys/gals...I'd prefer to buy the Z06 than the M3, but this is a decent cash outlay...and build quality is as important as power and braking ability (which the M3 is behind in these latter ones, for sure).
But I'm a hot-rodder. It's gonna be hard (and VERY expensive) to hot-rod an M3 (although the end result would be very cool). With this passion for modifying comes the need for 1) an aftermarket 2) other enthusiasts who share your passion and will share info.
The M3 forum sees 4 hits a day! This forum on the other hand is full of great info and owners who are much more performance-oriented. Kinda helps with my decision. :)
What are the practicalities of following proper break-in if one buys the car in another state and drives it home (lets assume 1k miles)?
That's what I did .. but only about 350 miles .. and it was great! Stay off the big highways and look for older state road routes. It let's you vary your speed (without looking like a moron to the other drivers), and the small towns along the way give you an opportunity to stop, go thru the gears a couple of times, and wave at the onlookers ;)
In regard to which car to buy ... this sounds like a discussion of investment strategies! Screw the economy, screw the resale value .. the only issue is which car turns your crank. You're absolutely right that it's a big cash outlay .. all the more reason to make sure you get a car that you'll continue to love for years (hopefully) to come.
Buy the Z you wont regret it...If you have to drive the car a long distance when new, vary the speeds, stop every hour or so, and you will have a great break-in...If you havnt driven on yet, do it...It will leave you with a permanent smile... :yesnod:
Jerry, you are right in that this should _not_ be an investment issue. I know enough to know that purchasing a new car is a horrible investment, even if you lock it away in a vault somewhere and pull it out of there 35 years later (which also means you didn't enjoy it at all!).
So while its great to say "screw the economy and screw the resale" (I can do that since I'm not really affected by either at the moment), I'm not going to get "screwed" on the purchase price.
MSRP +$5k is stupid. Period. Sorry if that's offensive to some people. I plan to modify the car within a day of ownership (at least that's when I'll start ordering parts), so I can do a lot with that $5k+ savings. :)
IOW, I'm not overpaying for the car...no matter what I get.
