Default Pilot Bearing

I'm looking at a C5 corvette here. A 1999 FRC. The seller says it the pilot bearing makes an intermittent squeaking noise.

How difficult is to to change one and is that a serious issue? It involves removing the transmission. I'm not sure how the transmission comes off on a C5.

You have to pull down the rear cradle and take out the whole torque tube assembly meaning the differential and the transmission. If you do that and have a M6, change the clutch at the same time cuz changing the pilot bearing for a squeak is not worth it. If you pay someone to do it you are looking at anywhere from $450 to $700 for people that know what they are doing (ie, not the dealer, probably $1500).

While you had it all apart, you'd be crazy not to replace the throwout bearing too at a minimum-probably the clutch and pressure plate also. And I'd add the remote bleeder while it was down.

Any of you guys do it yourself? I hardly ever take anything to the shop. I hate shops. Anyways, does it require any special tools. I've only worked /w autos.

I dont think you need any special tools, but I've never done it myself so I'm not sure. I think the pilot bearing is a blind bearing so I'm sure it will be fun to get out. I'd make sure your flywheel isn't warped and get the clutch balanced cause I dont think everyone balances their clutches from the factory.

Check out this series of pics where my buddy and I pulled out his drivetrain to change the clutch, slave and pilot bearing. Not hard but certainly a chunk of work.

I've done that job half a dozen times on jackstands in my garage, not too bad. If you have Longtubes you may have to remove them to get at the clutch....

For the love of god, install a remote bleeder! Just DO IT. I swore every time that I would install one next time I had to go in there. Finally installed it on the 5th time, SO much easier.
