Default 2001 Z06 Questions

I am looking at a 2001 Z06 with 23000 miles for $26000. The body and the interior are in great shape, good tires, new brakes all around. Runs great seems to have a strong clutch. Is there any problems I should look for on this car before I buy it ? Is there anything on the Z06 to look for to tell if it has been beat on ? I am willing to put the time in on this as I have big plans for this car but dont want to spend big money getting a ragged out car. I did a Carfax and it came up clean and only had one owner and was purchased a month ago at auction. Any help on what to look for would be great. Thanks. Robert.

If you have a friend at a GM dealer, have him (or her) pull the service history of the car. Look at all the things that the car has been brought in for, as well as if the re-ringing was done- when the build date of the car was, etc. It should give you a better idea of what you are looking at with this car other than just a carfax report.

I bought my 01 in April with 27k on it.
It uses a qt of oil every 2 to 3k miles depending on the way its driven
Get a exteded warranty for sure.
Had the drivers window motor crap 2weeks later.
Love the car.

Nor has mine I only stated that as he asked about the issues that '01s faced and what to look for.

I bought my 01 new. It was built in late April of 2001 and I took NCM delivery on June 1. It is my daily driver. Although I have heard many war stories of oil consumption, I have not experienced it personally. I have experienced the column lock issue which GM repaired under warranty and, later, issued a recall for modification. I understand this is a problem that has been a pebble in Chevy's shoe for years.

Acceleration is fantastic. Braking is even more astonishing. The lateral g's it pulls in a turn are neck stretching. But the most amazing performance of all is the 29 to 30 mpg on the highway (cruse control set at 70 to 75, depending on speed limit).

In mechanical reliability, I rate my z as one of the best I have ever owned.

No doubt about it, a Corvette is special.

In the end, there can be only one...
and the one is Corvette Z06.

My '01 QS Z06 ( production date June 18th '01) has only had a passengers side axle seal and the steering colum lock fix in its 27,000 miles. No oil issues between 3000 mile oil changes but I installed both a coalescing filter and a water/oil seperator tank as a precaution.
Good advise to get a GM service history report ( just ask the service writer at any GM dealer). The production date is wrtten on your drivers door and by VIN number http://www.c5registry.com/membersonl...2001c5prod.htm
There are a **it pot full of articles to read before and after you decide to buy an '01 Zhttp://www.idavette.net/hib/02ls6/listpages.htm................................http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/
A must read for oil catch tanks is http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1781182
My wife has a 2000 red/red FRC which gets a lot of looks but you can't beat the Z06!! At 56 y/o and retired I need a little heart pounding from time to time .

drove it again this weekend. It runs great, cant find anything wrong with it except it needs a good coat of polish on it. Everything looks good, price seems fair, but I seem a little hesitant to buy it and I dont know why.

2001 had a oil burning problem. If you arent sure take it to a Dealer and have them do a leak down test. Cost under 200 bucks but there will be no questions. Did one on mine when I bought it. Now thousand of miles later not a drop of oil usage.

Good luck. Where are you located? If you want a clean Z look below and lets chat.

I am not sure a leak down test will provide a solid answer to oil consumption as the condition is brought on by ring flutter under high RPM's. Like driving on the highway in 3rd gear for example...not by sitting still. Moreover the condition was not always a ring issue either but the valley cover under the intake manifold cured this for a lot of 01 owners.

I had an 01 Z06- it was a great car for the time I owned it, I went thru all of the threads on oil consumption and from what I gathered it was blown out of proportion to include the entire 01 Z model which we know is not true. My 01 never burned a drop of oil. Those few that did, were either left alone by the owners due to the amount being somewhat less then what GM considered abnormal, some had the above mentioned valley cover swapped out for the later design, and some had the rings done if they fell into that category...your best bet id to read up on the issue and how\why it was caused and ask the previous owner about the consumption (or lack there of) and have your local dealer run the VIN to see the service history.

Like I said, I loved the 01 Z and many guys on here love them as well...just do your homework! good luck!

I AM sure that a leak down test will NOT provide an answer as to oil consumption. A leak down test is a great thing to do, but it does not test the oil rings.

Default valley baffle.........

Byte_me is correct in to bring to mind the valley PVC oil baffle that may not sealed correctly causing oil consumption. Plus this issue with the rings was ring tension which showed up in high rpms. The oil consumption was not limited to the LS6 but to the LS1 as well ( showed up more in manual tranny because of driving styles attributed to a manual tranny. The production date for the change to the production line ring revision was May '01. The TSB does cover the '02 as well, but that doesn't mean they all had problems.
Look for any oil residue in the tail pipe as well as the aft part of the body.
Cold startup piston slap was also an issue on pre Arpil '01 engine. The piston was changed and this revision piston was used till May '02.

$26,000 is a little high for an '01, I think you can do better.

It depends on the color of the car. I looked for a while before settling for white Z. I paid $25k for it with many more miles on it but that was 1 year ago when Z were bring more money.

I have not found any others even close to that price in my area, dealers all want over $30k and low ball me on my trade.
