I decided to try to put some gaskets of some kind around my taillights to prevent the dripping water making the rear all dirty. I went out and got some rubberized weather seal, the smallest I could find so it would fit. I measured it and cut and installed it around the outside of the taillight lens. when installing I found out that even the smallest one available was too thick, I couldn't get the lenses back on the car, the gaskets were too thick. so at first I figured oh well, it was worth a try, I'm not out much. Then I went for another take on the problem. I removed the strip from the taillight lens and moved it to the bumper around the socket where the taillight lens is mounted. here's what it ended up looking like:
since the gasket fits behind the lens it doesn't interfere with it fitting at all. as an extra bonus it pushes the tailights out slightly. its not as much as the flush mount kits (which I don't like the looks of anyway) but the lenses are moved outwards a small amount, maybe 5mm or so. they are still inset into the bumper just how I like it but having them slightly farther out looks really good. I'm pretty impressed! You can't see the gasket at all when the lights are installed, its behind the lens rather than around it.
what I got was called Marine & Automotive weather seal, 8mm thick, 29mm wide, 5.2m long. they call it the "Black D Profile" not too expensive, I found it on the shelf at Lowes.
[QUOTE=rws.1;1561454140]I found some at Lowes. It was available in Black ,Gray,White and Brown since I have a QS Vette, I opted for the Gray
Here is what I bought Frost King extreme weather seal 3/8" by 1/4" thick 17 ft was about $6
FYI,
This same D weatherstrip in Black makes a nice front hood seal.
Just run it along the top edge of the front clip edge.
When the hood closes, it makes a good seal for water and dirt.
Hey MC, doesn't the water still get under the tail lights after you did this? I don't understand how you're able to keep the water out when doing it the way you did.
