I need to put a new air filter in my totally stock '99. Is there a preferred brand or style? I was at Advance the other day and saw a K&N high flow filter for about $62. Does anybody have experience with these?
Any input would be appreciated.
Rule of thumb........more air in & more air out (via exhaust) = more HP. A filter for the mst part is a peice of paper that keeps the dust out. Why spend huge $$ on a cold air intake, forced air system when down to the basics.........paper filtering air. Go to the big auction & buy one of those dual filter systems (under $100 complete) & you will be happy.
Thanks for the reply. I'm not talking about an aftermarket intake, just a replacement filter for my stock airbox. Just looking for a brand or type preference.
There are plenty of oem drop in after market re-usable gauze filters available...K&N, S&B, GREEN, FRAM ("Synwash" and "Airhog"), AIRAID, AFE, etc.
Contact each company and ask them for their results. Compare the results, pricing, availability, warranty, etc.
Some people believe that only oem paper filters should be used in a Corvette.
Some people believe that any gauze filter that uses oil will harm the MAF.
Some people believe that dry gauze filters are the best.
Some people believe that after market gauze filters will allow more "dirt" into the motor.
Interestingly, not one after market "cold air intake" or "cooler air intake" uses a paper filter, all of them use after market filters. The reason is they have the ability to flow more air than a thicker paper filter.
What is your goal and expectation of an after market air filter?
Don't expect huge horsepower/torque improvements with just an after market air filter. You can expect to hear more sound, which some equate to more power. It's just the thinner gauze filter flowing more air.
Don't expect huge improvements in fuel economy. I've seen 1-2mpg as a general rule, but driving styles are different for everyone. The biggest advantage to me is that the after market filters are "lifetime" and I don't need to run all over town looking for someone with a paper filter in stock.
I've used K&N or S&B (my preference) oiled gauze filters in every vehicle we own and never found "dirt" or had a dirty MAF.
Common sense should tell you to clean the filter regularly with oil/filter changes. If oil is required, don't over oil the filter pleats. Follow the manufacturers suggested cleaning/oil kit recommendations and use sparingly, allowing it to wick through the pleats over night.
You will never get a consensus on the topic of which filter is better, so use what you want to use in your car. If all of that is to hard to digest, use a quality paper filter.
Check the CF classified ads going back a couple of weeks and you're bound to find someone who's got a used K&N drop in filter for much less than $62.00! In fact, S&B FILTERS will be less than that. You can order directly from the company.

A lot of people have issues wity K&N, but I have found them to be very good filters, you must also look at where you drive. I am in a very clean environment most of the time, no dusty roads etc..........also, you can beat $62............google K&N there are some prices lower.
A K&N isn't what I've got on the vette, but I've used them on my trucks for the last 15 yrs. Just got a 07 Sierra and I've already got a K&N in it. They run different prices but I think mine was around 55 with tax.
I had a Fram Airhog on my last car. Couldn't tell any performance difference. Cleaning it was a total PITA and takes hours to do properly (letting it dry completely).
I put a Fram paper filter in my C5 but I don't like it because it's orange around the edge which is visible under the hood. Next time I'll get one with black around the edge for better aesthetics.

I have one in my '99. Don't be looking for too much in the performance department however. Buy a K&N because it filters better and you can forget it for a while. You should find one at an online parts house for about $50.
If you keep your stock airbox, dont expect performance gains with any kind of a filter. I found any filter with the zip tie mod gives you a performance boost you can feel. Other intakes work good as well. The zip tie mod is a cheapie mod.
