I have noticed that several Corvette owners very seldomly drive without the targa off. I did that with my last car because there was a noticeable difference in handling and chassis strength. Is that the same case with Corvettes?

The C5 Corvette was designed with a hydroformed chassis. It is rigid with and without the targa top on. Earlier Corvettes were known to have some flex without the targa in place.
The C5 Z06 and FRCs are even stiffer. IMHO, flex is not an issue with the C5.

Others of us rarely drive with the top on
I beleive the C5 is the first Corvette that was designed to be just about as rigid without the top as with, i.e., no need for the C3's T-bar and no need for the C4's arrangements (some sort of wrench/fastener to lock the top on; I'm not familiar with the details). The C5/C6 chassis is *real* stout; very little flex.
I just looked at your avatar and sig. If you're ever in Austin, look me up. I'll take you for a ride.
You drive, and I'll pay for the beers! I may have to take you up on that, as you drive the exact color Vette I want... aside from red or black. If you have anymore pics of it, please pm them to me.

Most rigidly built Vette ever (before the C6 of course...)
It isn't the lack of rigidity that keeps my top on at highway speeds, it is the parachute effect and turbulence that is created by the air rushing into the rear compartment and having no where to go. Hatch vents help but only help.
The C5 Was Designed As A Convertible First So There Is No Difference Between Cars . The Only Difference Is What Top They Bolted On J.m.h.o.
The Coupe doesn't have the Convertible’s extra crossbar behind the seats. The Convertible doesn't have the Coupe's "top bow". The Hardtop has both, and it doesn't have the hole in the back for the Coupe's hatch. The Coupe is about 7% stiffer with the top in, than with it out.
I am one who rarely takes the top off if I am going to do spirited driving, hate all the wind in the cabin at 130+
I agree completely. If racing, it's not beneficial to have the targa off... but I don't race often. I normally just cruise around with the music up just enjoying the ride. However when I do get a heavy foot, I would much rather drive with the top on. Oh and this heat wave in the south has dictated that the top + cold AC is a must for driving even at night.
