Default Pilot Bearing

What would it take to change the Pilot Bearing on a 1999 FRC? I would be doing this myself. I've worked on regular cars but never anything w/ a torque tube like the C5. Does this make it any more difficult?

The car has 107,000 miles on it. The owner had changed the clutch but never bothered changing the pilot bearin when he had it appart. Now I'm thinking about buying the car. However, he says the pilot bearing is making a noise but car is still more than drivable. Whatever that means. I test drove it and heard nothing. But non the less I want to know what I'm getting into should I have to tear it down.

drop rear sub-frame and diff. slide it all back including torque tube , pilot bearing puller pull it out and put it all back , two guys maybe 1/2 day , and you have to get the car up high enough to get the sub-frame slid out from under it .

Do you have mechanical ability? Several tools will need to be acquired that are not usually used every day. Look for CF Member Dope's install. Excellent write up. I would also inspect everyhting and be prepared to change out the cluch, FW and PP along with all the hydraulics. Especially if you are planning on adding horsepwower in the near future, why not go ahead and get it done now. Once you're there you will see that this is a good idea. Also get a remote bleeder while you are at it.

Good Luck

you need the car up about 2.5 feet, a transmission jack, you have to take off the rear cradle and drop the torque tube along with the trans and rear diff. you have to take the exhaust off, and tunnel plate. you can get a loaner, pilot bearing puller tool from auto zone for free. I would replace the clutch master and slave cylinders while it is apart and put the remote bleeder line on it. can do it all in 1/2 day.

Do a search here, there was just a post about this and it had tons of pictures. It was quite a job as I saw it.

its a lot of work, def. going to take you longer than a 1/2 day your first time. ive done clutches about 7 times on C5's and we still dont have it down to a 1/2 day. usually a long morning to night job, or a nice paced weekend project. hardest part is getting the torque tube back in and lined up, the rest is pretty simple!

if i was you, i honestly wouldnt do anything at this point. if your not noticing anything when your driving it then your fine. usually you will have some sort of symptoms. the noise that comes from the drivetrain is completely normal in our cars. thats why you need a louder exhaust or a new stereo system!!

Mine was making noise and by the time I got it in, the bearing had siezed up and was a huge job to get off and changed. Might want it to get it looked at to see first.
