Default Painting calipers

After reading all the past posts on painting calipers, I have one question.

Most of the diy's used high temperature paint, like DupiColor. Some used Rustoleum, but it's not high temoerature. The directions say do not use in surfaces the will be 200 deg or more. Can I use the Rustoleum? I do not want to use a spray.

Thanks in advance.

I'm thinking of doing them red and Rustoleum doesn't make the High Temp in red. I guess I'm going to have to use the DupliColor since I don't want to spray them.

I used Rustoleum Red..and have had no trouble with the paint fading or heat damage. I painted the Corvette letters with a Silver Leafing Pen I got at a craft store.. I think it came out pretty good

kikker - That's the color I want. Did you use the spray or brush on? Also did you remove them from the bracket or do them on the car?

I used the duplicolor paint on my C4 and C5 rotors. It still looks great.

I did use regular rustoleum on my rotor hats on my C4. No problem with heat, but spray on wheel cleaner discolored them. I don't use that stuff any more.

The reality is that the calipers really don't get that hot. Think about it - lots of people get them powdercoated (including me) and that stuff bonds with the metal at about 400 degrees F. If they got much hotter than that - the powdercoating would not adhere.

As far as painting - before I had them powdercoated I used the G2 FoliaTec kits that are widely available from the Corvette vendors. It is a two stage epoxy - and when it dries - it's hard as nails.

The DupliColor kit is cheaper but does a similar quality job.

Like anything else - the more time you spend preparing the surface, masking off areas you don't want to paint, and actually performing the job - the better your outcome will be. Also - as far as the brushes that come with some kits - THEY SUCK! Buy a couple of good quality horsehair brushes in different widths. As far as the CORVETTE letters on the fronts - the best and easiest way is to take a brand new razor blade or utility knife blade and slice the paint off the letters. You can hit the raised letters with some fine emory paper when the paint is dry to shine them up. If you use a brush, you won't HAVE to take the calipers off....you can just pull them from the rotor and hang them with some wire so that they are hanging by the brake lines.

This is an easy and great low cost mod that will improve the looks of your wheels and brakes immeasurably.

I too used the Folia Tec kit on mine - been on there since November 2001 and still looks great. The Duplicolor kit does look good too and the Rustoleum paint should do fine if you make sure the calipers are cleaned well before application.

Just another question to add. Did anyone use primer before the color coat?

I can't speak for anyone else - but I've never heard of anyone using a primer first. If you really take your time making sure that the calipers are very clean, just layer on the paint. Your first coat, you'll think that it won't cover, but if you build up the layers you will achieve a very smooth finish.
