A slighter wider tire - whether it's front or back would increase the contact patch of rubber to the road surface. A larger contact patch will give you ostensibly better traction for turning and braking. In back you also add the forces from acceleration.
But simply installing a wider tire without a required wider wheel is counterproductive and even dangerous.

what would be an idle tire setup for spirited street and track fun? regardless of wheel width

I assume you mean ideal, right? Not being the spelling and grammar police, but it took me a few minutes to figure out your question.
I run a 275-35x18 in front and a 305-30x19 in back. I think these tires in these sizes offer great grip and still will slide a little bit when you want them to. They are by no means great tires for hooking up at the drag strip - they're too expensive to do a burn out with them, but overall I am very happy with them - I run Michelin PS2's BTW.
