Default Breathless Performance Shifter Install

If you have a C-5 with a stock 6-speed shifter, you should buy and install the BPP shifter yesterday. It's a very nice piece with a great feel that installs easily. The directions are excellent and the install is very simple. By all means, do it yourself. Don't let the console removal scare you. There's nothing to it.

The throws are significantly shorter and dead-on accurate. 1st to 2nd and 5th to 6th are 1 7/8" shorter than stock. 3rd to 4th is 2" shorter than stock. Instead of a 5.5 inch throw, it's only 3.5 inches. There is no difficulty engaging reverse.

Since there are several ways to configure the location of the BPP shifter, give some thought to where the stock shifter is from the dash in the various gears, and whether your arm is in a comfortable position in each gear. Take "before" measurements of the stock unit from the HVAC panel, so you have a point of reference when you are checking out all your options with the BPP handle. I determined that I liked the stock position for 1st, 3rd, 5th and reverse, but that 2nd, 4th and 6th had my elbow too far rearward, so I ended up mounting the threaded handle on the passenger side of the base in its forward holes. The wedge that comes with it is fat side down to tilt the **** toward the driver.

How is the shift effort and notchiness compared to what you had before (what did you have before?)

I had the stock unit. The BPP shifter comes with 4 sets of springs that are painted different colors, so you can chose from firm to more firm to very firm to firmest. They also are a breeze to change out.

I picked the softest ones. No slop. No chance of chosing the wrong gear. Firm engagement with a metalic click feel in each gear.

Thanks all for the nice words.

What about noise/vibration levels throughout the rpm range?

No noise, vibration, heat, nothing. No downside I can come up with.

Is this shifter shorter than stock or about the same? It looks as if it is stock height in the pics?

Mine vibrated like hell under WOT conditions in third and fourth gear. Could hear it over the sound of the exhaust and the wind blowing through the windows. The camcorder recorded the shifter noise even with all the wind blowing by the microphone.

I got rid of it two years ago and went back to the stock setup.

A bit too tall for my taste ... not sure if we can cut it down.

I have the **** at the top of the shaft. These can be set up significantly shorter.

As for vibration, did you lay down the bead of RTV and install the isolating gasket? I spend a lot of time at WOT.

Here's how tall my shift **** is and yes, you can go shorter, but the shifting effort increases as you do. Just keep that in mind.
