I purchased my 2000 with a Cold Air kit already installed. I'm not sure what brand it is, but it's red with dual cone shaped air filters (one on either side).
Open element filters, depending on your driving conditions, every 3-4 months. Best to always clean when particulary dirty. Make a habit to check at least once a month or so to check for cleaning intervals. I personally check everything under the hood once a week (might be over-kill). As to the brand...more info is needed, a picture would make it easy to identify.
Cleaning depends on the filter type. If it is a rechargeable/reuseable type but a k&n or afe cleaning/recharging kit. On the top of the cone of the filters, there should be a stamp of a brand or so.
You can clean it with Simple Green and water, recharge it with a mixture of mineral oil and alcohol in a spray bottle.
Might i add, use low pressure water to rinse out and let filter "air" dry. Using an air compressor to blow out can ruin the filters. But buying a "premade" kit eases the process of traking these items down, but will do the job.
K&N sells a filter recharge kit with cleaner and oil. Works just fine with any reusable/oil type filter. You can get it at pretty much any auto parts store.
I washed them with a hose at low pressure from the inside out...the water came out brown on the other side so mine really needed to be cleaned. I "air" dried them in the shade on a warm day.
Also, don't OVER oil the filter. Just a light coat to cover all the areas. Too much oil can geek up the MAF sensor.
I clean mine once a year during Christmas break and once during June/July. Takes longer to dry during December/January but still works. I use the K & N filter recharge kit, works great.
