My car recently kicked the service column lock on me. I checked out the history and this recall has already been done twice! I called the local chevy dealer and was told that GM hasn't been standing behind this recall and has been making the customer pay when it breaks, to the tune of $800.00. He gave me the number for GM and said my best bet is to call them first to try and get them to cover it. So i will do that later today. I'm wondering if they don't cover it, what are my other options, rather than spending $800.00 at the dealer. Anything aftermarket, or any ideas on how to get this covered?

there is a half a dozen of these threads in the past week or so and as I mentioned in some of them get the Column Lock bypass and be done with it. problem solved cost a little over $50
Call Corvettes of Houston 800-829-6434. Order the column lock bypass module, $46 plus $8. shipping. You'll get it in a few days. Takes about an hour to install depending on how careful you are when you work on interior parts.
First part of the procedure will be to place the lock pins in the unlock position either via a key operation or external power. Once the 12v moves the pin to the lock position, you'll perform a few steps to isolate the system and then unplug the existing connection. You plug in the new bypass module and a few more steps to ensure it went well. Then reinstall the knee bolster (4 screws).
Afterwards the motor cannot push the pins back down because it was driven to the retracted position and power completely removed from that circuit. The module will then tell the computer BCM everything is fine.
No more worries.
Too bad you had the dealer do the first two procedures. There is a copy of the recall which states no charge:
