I believe GM does have a REAL fix for this issue....the only problem is it would cost them considerably more the do the real fix instead of the way they've been told to do it through all of those recall bulletins that the service departments keep referring to. My GM service manager finally got so pissed at GM for the "run around" he's been getting for years and the many, many corvette customers who had to keep coming back time and time again for the CLB problem.
The service manager decides to call GM Engineering division in Detroit and finds out that they actually solved the problem after 2003 with a redesigned Column Lock mechanism. They told him that they haven't had any problems with it on 04's, etc. He asked why they didn't share this information with the dealerships and they said the mechanism costs of $250 compared to $45 for the K Harness. He was as pissed as I was. Apparently GM wasn't real anxious to share this with us or the dealer's service people.
The part # for the new mechanism is 88965331 (Lock 2.195)
They installed it back in June 07 and I've had no problems since then.
I had the later model column lock mechanism put in, too, over a year ago, but that was after they removed the plate. When they just had the plate out, I still got the fuel shutoff issue, but after they put the late model mechanism in, I've never had an issue.
I think this information should be passed to NHTSA, Better Business Bureau, and the media outlets so word can get around and see how GM reacts to that! Everyone should copy the below information and forward an email to Chevy customer service! Maybe sending enough emails will get their attention!

I'm glad that in the couple of months you've had yours you've been ok...hopefully your car will stay that way...however...
This is actually "old" news and has been posted several times and no it hasn't been the final fix. GM would like to think so but like most things they try to fix..yada, yada, yada. I know a couple of '04 owners that haven't had the lock screw up but have had many communication errors in the system that left them stranded.
Your post on this has merit though as many here have simply stopped reading or responding to 99% of the CLB posts because people just won't listen and them come back crying about their locks f'n up or the whole issue has gotten so baffling that they just give up in frustration and continue to allow the dealerships to stick it up their hineys.
Maybe some will read this, try the newer mechanism and get a few more happy days out of their cars. The recall work regarding the K-harness coupled with the reprogram is burning many folks now. I'm outta here...
I'm pissed, because I put a CLB in my '04, AND DIDN'T NEED IT. But we had no way of knowing, I asked about '04's when I bought it, and everyone told me the '04's were vulnerable too. Pretty sad, with seven years of production they fix it in the last year, I'm suprised they even bothered! (In my gut though, I KNEW my '04 wasn't vulnerable) The bad thing about NOT having a column lock is they have an easier time winching my car up a flatbed when they steal it. (they don't have a column lock to shear)
