Is there any point in getting a tune with just basic mods (b&b bullets and blackwing for performance) - if so, any ideas how much I could expect to pick up? Thanks.
Probably no more than 15 to 20 HP, but the tuner can disable the skip shift (and other non essentials) and tune the fuel delivery mapping so that the car runs at the most efficient level. that's ther real advantage without some serious mods.. Your gas mileage might go up a few MPG also.
When I did a tune only I gained about 35rwhp, at $450 that's pretty cheap HP per dollar.
Plus as stated above your car will run alot better.
With nothing more than an after market filter on my 02 Z06 I got a dyno tune. 28hp/12tq to the wheels simply by adjusting the A/F ratios to clean them up. The stock tune works good but a dyno tune works better. I spent $300 for the tune.
Then add setting the cooling fan on/off temps to something better, removing skip shift, torque mgmt, rev limiter, etc... Not to mention the tune is set for a car that is used on track. Nothing drastic or on the edge. Just a cleaner curve. I didn't get better gas mileage but it isn't worse. You can feel 28hp at 4Krpms.
Try and get that kind of performance improvement for $300 with bolt ons...
If I was you I would do it....the first dyno charge is the bggest....can always go in and re-tune it for otehr parts added on for hourly rates most the time
